The Most Popular Christmas Toys by Year | Would You Still Love These Toys?

Friday, November 20th, 2009

So, I saw a cool graphic that shows the most popular Christmas toys from 1960 through 2009. That’s 50 years of the most popular Christmas toys! Not only is it interesting to see, especially to note the years I was a child (did I request any of those gifts? I don’t think so…) but I have a challenge for myself that you will get the benefits of! I am going to write two lists here. The first list will be items that adults would still love to get as a way of nostalgia. The second list will be items that kids today would still love. Ready to see how I do? Grade me on a curve!

Most Popular Christmas Gifts You’d Still Love

operation game

1. Operation game (Most Popular Christmas Gift of 1965)

The novelty of this amazing game will never wear off. And it’s always a challenge, it never gets easier! It might cause more swearing from an adult crowd, but it’ll still be fun.

uno game

2. UNO card game (Most Popular Christmas Gift of 1972)

It’s a card game I’ve always been able to understand more than poker, and if you have to incorporate kids it’s better than Go Fish. Imagine if you were trapped on a camping trip without wifi or a cellphone signal or anything – the only thing to do is hike, make smores and play UNO for hours. It’s a simpler life. But winning is just as rewarding.

3. Wii (Most Popular Christmas Gift of 2006)

Well, this is still new. If you don’t have one (I don’t) you might want one (I kinda do).

furbies

4. Furby (Most Popular Christmas Gift of 1998)

It was terrifying and for that reason, this is a great joke gift. Scare your friends. I’ve always been fond of furbies and I don’t know why… It’s not that I’d want to own one, I just find them mysterious. Like going to the zoo and getting a peek of an sea creature that usually stays hidden. There are new furby models but the original is best because it’s cutest.

Most Popular Christmas Gifts Kids Could Still Love

1. Wii (Most Popular Christmas Gift of 2006)

Again, a Wii. Just pray the kids don’t throw the remote and break it, yea?

super soaker

2. Super Soaker (Most Popular Christmas Gift 1990)

Okay, what is the deal here. Do kids not like spraying each other with blasts of water? Do they not have any substitutes? I remember many a time being pelted by a mean neighbor boy (it was totally a sign of love, whatever) with his super soaker. And once I got my hands on it…well, there would have been payback! They’re so fun to use. It’s like paintball except less expensive and less messy.

3. Strawberry Shortcake (Most Popular Christmas Gift 1979)

I have a friend who went on eBay and got her daughter a bunch of the original dolls – and she loves them. There are some newer designs for the doll..and most of them are kind of slutty and therefore I do not like them. But somewhere out there are little girls who will still be receptive to toys without enhanved boobs and Barbie-like feet. A doll is a doll, and Strawberry Shortcake is very cute – and smells good!

legos

4. Legos (Most Popular Christmas Gift 1981)

I don’t think legos are unpopular now, exactly – but they aren’t AS popular. And why not? They’re awesome. Don’t people still go to Lego Land? I always viewed legos as a boy toy, growing up (probably because I was used to pink things, and the lego dolls were all guys except for one girl). But they’re for anyone. Man, I kind of want to go find my old legos. I never really gave them a fair chance. Guess I know how the rest of my day is being spent.

Let’s Get Sentimental…Again! Best Toys for Girls

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Smart girls always remember! Here, I continue my journey into the things I loved in childhood and during those pesky teenage years with this post. This particular post seems to focus on childhood…but that’s okay! I had an amazing childhood full of equally amazing memories. I was blessed, I know that. Must be why my life hasn’t ever been so great since then ;)

gund bears

Gund Bears: I hardly cared that they were well-made, I just knew that the SNUFFLES bear was so cute that I had to have him. And I still have him..somewhere…hmm…

flower fairies

Flower Fairies: Illustrated by Cicely Mary Barker, these were a big part of my childhood. My Granny actually had Flower Fairies as wallpaper in her bathroom. Needless to say, I grew up a bit obsessed.

my little pony pink castle

My Little Pony Castle: You probably have to get it on eBay – we even got ours from a Garage Sale. But oh man, I LOVED playing with it. It’s so hard to pick out favorite toys from the 80’s…I even had the Barbie Camper once! But we were never rich, mostly it was gifts from relatives, garage sale stuff, or special presents for Christmas. I appreciate them all so much. Oooh…and we had the My Little Pony Dance Studio…called Baby Bonnet School of Dance. It was seafoam green and had great accessories (like leg warmers for the ponies) and three spinning built-in stands.

dolly buggy

Doll Buggy: You have to get your kid one of these, right? I mean, if she wants one. I used to push buggies full of dolls everywhere. I still do. I mean, kidding? Doll Buggy > Doll Stoller. These are some of the best toys for girls.

brave little tailor pictures

Brave Little Tailor movie. I betcha thought I was gonna type “Brave Little Toaster”, huh? Minnie Mouse and Mickey Mouse movies and cartoons are something I always remember. Brave Little Tailor Wiki. Minnie was a princess in this movie with one of those cone hat things, and I wanted to be her. I was also a big fan of Mickey’s Delayed Date. Mickey’s Delayed Date Wiki. These cartoons literally captivated me. I think they used to play them on Sunday nights. And we never (evereverever) had cable so I was overjoyed when great TV was on. Oh – AND okay, one more. Mickey’s Rival. Mickey Mouse cartoons are on Youtube. :)

Let’s Get Sentimental

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

There are some things I will always love, even though their hey day is long past gone. If you’re a smart woman, you never give up all of the sentimental crap (yes – you can call it crap) in your life. These are things to remember, to own forever, and force your kids into loving. :) I will post part two of “Let’s Get Sentimental” tomorrow…stay tuned and whatnot!

reel big fish

Reel Big Fish – Sell Out: From the Turn the Radio Off album. While I eventually get sick of all songs after a while, I can NEVER get sick of this song.

gnomes book

David the Gnome: This was one of my favorite cartoons and since we didn’t have cable, I’d only catch it occasionally at my Grandparent’s house. I later saw the book Gnomes and it totally captures my imagination from that age – it’s gorgeous with detailed illustrations. It’s not affiliated with David the Gnome, but the Gnome on the cover looks just like David. If you’re an aunt or uncle who has kids come over a lot, get this as a coffee table book. Because they’ll love coming over to look at it, even though it’s not really a kids book.

candy necklaces

Candy necklaces: I know they’re still around but you probably don’t wear them once you’re past 20 unless you’re a playboy bunny/playmate. But I have fond memories of these as a cute accessory. Even though we all know the candy isn’t the best candy ever. Still, they’re colorful and fun. If you work in an office (like Pam or Jim from The Office) you could get a jar of these and put them on your desk. Suddenly your popularity will RISE!

angelina ballerina original

Angelina Ballerina: The ORIGINAL one, and just the books. I cannot believe they redesigned Angelina Ballerina to look all modern. I fondly remember reading Angelina Ballerina books like “Angelina’s Ballet Class” with my Mom. Once I had grown out of it, my sister would later get an Angelina Ballerina doll and I would be very jealous of it. It was THIS Angelina Ballerina doll, I think. She was later a casualty of the dog…oops!

skip it toy

Skip It: Using the Skip It was the very best way to get some exercise while feeling totally ‘cool’. We’d have competitions to see who could skip it the most without stopping. I probably never won. But I still had all kinds of fun.

a is for annabelle

Tasha Tudor books: Something my Granny raised me on was Tasha Tudor. I am going to need to do a post all about my favorite Tasha Tudor books. But hands down my favorite is A is for Annabelle. My Granny actually gave me a doll and told me it was Annabelle. Best doll ever.

clueless soundtrack

Clueless soundtrack. As if?! I would get this just for the Jill Sobule song Supermodel. It actually has a lot of fun songs on it though, and I listened to it a lot as a teen. Noteable songs: Shake Some Action – David Lowery, All the Young Dudes – World Party, and Fake Plastic Trees (acoustic) – Radiohead. Somehow I thought that listening to it I was going to become as rich and happy as Cher in the movie. It didn’t happen. I did once have one of those pens she had in the movie – the kind with the feathers on it. What-ever.

center stage dvd special

Center Stage movie: It’s the cheesiest movie ever, but there’s just something about it. I can’t get enough of it. They dance and I smile.

beatrix potter figurinebeatrix potter figurines

Beatrix Potter: Her world stands the test of time. Even though I didn’t see that movie they made a few years ago with Renee Zellweger, I have great

Renee, your movie looked boring!

Renee, your movie looked boring!

love for the stories and illustrations of Beatrix Potter. They’re just so imaginative. Let your kids have Sponge Bob (Cheese Bob is what I call him) and whatever else – but try to get them to watch or read Beatrix Potter. We have collectible figurines now and they’re precious. My favorite story is probably The Tale of Two Bad Mice since I always loved Dollhouses. Collect all of the Beatrix Potter books!

kindle pictures

Kindle Wireless Reading Device (6″ Display, Global Wireless, Latest Generation) @ Amazon $259. The Amazon kindle is great because it’s as thin as a magazine but it can hold 1,5000 books (which is more than my bookcases hold). Apparently the kindle has no glare like most screens have, and it even has a super long battery life. Still, wouldn’t you miss holding the weight of a book? This has to be great for tech people or people who travel a lot.

Moon in my Room @ Amazon $18.69. This is a great Christmas gift for kids or teens. It comes with a remote control, an audio CD that gives you moon toysa tour of the moon and it comes to life showing you the 12 cycles of the moon. You can put it on your wall and when the lights are off it lights up. It’s great for space themed rooms, or kids interested in science. Hitachi HV250R Magic Wand Massager @ Amazon $40.42. This has great reviews wherever I see it reviewed (including on Amazon). This is even the exact massager that Andy gives to Nancy in an episode of Weeds. I believe Samantha also has it in Sex and the City. Anyway, it is not a vibrator, although I’m pretty sure Samantha used it as one. You can use it for anything. Get this for your girlfriend/wife and she’ll love best massagersyou. “The Hitachi Magic Wand Model # HV250R is the legendary, super-powerful electric massager with the soft, flexible head. If this one doesn’t provide enough stimulation, nothing will! Two-speed switch, uses any standard 110-volt outlet. Overall length 12 inches (2-inch diameter head). One-year manufacturer’s warranty.
