The Hair Accessories to Buy Now and Wear for Halloween
Monday, March 8th, 2010
Etsy shop makers are creating the most wonderful hair accessories for women. Some are a bit eccentric for everyday wear, but some walk the line. I would recommend buying something now that you can also wear for Halloween. There’s a giant star if you’d like to wear it to a late night party as well as being a mermaid at some point. There’s a flower fascinator to wear everyday or be a fairy later on. And there’s even a giant red bow a la Minnie Mouse or Snow White. You don’t need to invest in something tacky at the last minute in October, buy something you’ll wear much more often than just once a year.

You DESERVE a Silk Robe, You Know You Do
Friday, February 19th, 2010
If you ever wondered where Belle on Secret Diary of a Call Girl buys her fabulous attire – the likes of which go beyond what Victoria’s Secret makes – I think I may have found a couple of the shops. Faire Frou Frou has “intimate apparel and indulgences” all with a feminine and flirty flair (there is also the: Faire Frou Frou blog), and Madame V is a UK store that has luxury collections that include “Femme Fatale” and “Viva”. It’s all very luxe.
I really love the “Crush” Kimono by Fleur of England, but it’s $325.00 which is above our ShesSmart.com price range of items under $100 (not to mention my personal price range). But the idea of a silk robe doesn’t have to be lost on us. We’ve mentioned silk robes before, because they evoke a wonderful feeling of being a starlet, perched ... Read More
Steal her Style: Evangeline Lilly is LOST Lovely
Wednesday, February 17th, 2010
Evangeline Lilly plays the tough-as- Dolly-Parton’s-Nails Kate Austin on Lost, and for a premiere party (aka the LOST Sunset on the Beach premiere screening in Honolulu, Hawaii) she wore an outfit that I think would be perfect for casual Spring/Summer weddings. Now, part of me thinks this is a halter jumpsuit, which — nonononono. So, pretend those aren’t pants, just a long dress.
What are the elements? A pretty dress in a breezy fabric, a long necklace, and wooden sandals with maybe a little bit of shine. Keep your makeup soft – just some brown eyeshadow and a bit of blush, maybe some clear/pinky gloss.

Reasons to Like Winter

"The Quiet Time" by Kim Zarney
Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home. ~Edith Sitwell
I suspect I’m not alone in having trouble enduring the winter months with a constant smile. These months of January, February, and March can seem truly bleak at times. We forget how often our surroundings affect us. The first snow we get seems magical, it’s clean and new. But then it mixes with dirt and turns to hopeless gray slush, leaving car windows and new winter boots spattered with salt and ice.
We really need a way to appreciate winter. Some sort of…mantra, to remind ourselves when we’re cleaning off cars in below 30 temperatures. Artist Kim Zarney seems beauty in these months. He told the Cleveland Botanical Garden that, “For me, the most interesting time of year is the quiet time —late fall, the dead of winter, and the very early days of spring. The time when the trees are bare, the underbrush is tangled, and the landscape finally opens up to reveal shapes and patterns hidden all summer.”

How to Incorporate More Genuine Nature into your Bedroom
Monday, January 11th, 2010
Picture from Everythingsright.com
I love nature, even though I’m not particular a big fan of dirt. It’s a weird sort of conflict within myself. For instance , I’d love to kneel down and play in a garden – but as soon as I get a chance I’ll run to wash my hands and get the dirt out from under my nails. But I really did grow up alongside nature: spending weeks at nature camps where we slept in cabins or on a giant hillside under the stars (which was a great idea in theory, but it made us wake up cold and covered with dew), enjoying reading and watching stories about flower fairies and gnomes, and spending all of my time in the backyard with the trees, marigold flowers, and ginkgo trees.
For all of my nature love, I don’t spend enough time outside these days. And now with Winter…well, who wants to stand in the snow? I’d fix the problem simply by buying a plant…sure, that sounds easy…but I’m not good at keeping them, er…alive. Now, I can keep Shopcat alive just fine! But plants…they confuse the razzle-dazzle out of me! Sometimes I think they’re thirsty so I water them and then they leaves turn yellow from being over-watered (who knew th ... Read More

Comfort food for the winter. Photo by quinnanya on Flickr.
ShesSmart.com asked entrants of our recent “Cook or Be Cooked” Wii game giveaway what food they liked to make. We’ve selected some of our favorite suggested recipes that seem easy and delish. We thank you all for your recommendations!
Potatoes! Reader Jennifer from Ohio suggested the recipe Company’s Coming Make-Ahead Potatoes to us. With all of this snow, it seems like a good time for such a indulgent and hot dish. It reminds us of twice-baked potatoes.

Be a Woman with Golden Mystique
Friday, December 18th, 2009
I saw the below image on Vintage Aphrodite, and loved it as immediately as I love any cat that I see. Part of why I love this photo is because I have already crafted a back-story to this girl in the picture. For instance, she definitely owns a cat. Probably a short-furred black kitty that snubs everyone except her. She wears wing-ed out black eyeliner every day, and doesn’t own a single lipstick. She washes her hair every other day to both be eco-conscious and eliminate the amount of time she spends on perfecting her coif. People often see her in unusual vintage dresses with high collars. She keeps a tin of mints in her purse, and has a dollar bill clip from her Grandpa Otis. Of course, this is all just my guess – just an idea of a person from this picture. The site just calls her “The Woman with the Golden Dress“.
