Reasons to Like Winter

"The Quiet Time" by Kim Zarney
Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home. ~Edith Sitwell
I suspect I’m not alone in having trouble enduring the winter months with a constant smile. These months of January, February, and March can seem truly bleak at times. We forget how often our surroundings affect us. The first snow we get seems magical, it’s clean and new. But then it mixes with dirt and turns to hopeless gray slush, leaving car windows and new winter boots spattered with salt and ice.
We really need a way to appreciate winter. Some sort of…mantra, to remind ourselves when we’re cleaning off cars in below 30 temperatures. Artist Kim Zarney seems beauty in these months. He told the Cleveland Botanical Garden that, “For me, the most interesting time of year is the quiet time —late fall, the dead of winter, and the very early days of spring. The time when the trees are bare, the underbrush is tangled, and the landscape finally opens up to reveal shapes and patterns hidden all summer.”

The Worst Chick Flicks We’re Expected to Like
Friday, January 15th, 2010
Even they were bored by their own movie!
Recently we put together a post of our top chick flicks that we find worth watching and even re-watching. But we’re not SO easily pleased – we don’t love every movie that is put out for us to gobble up. People who make movies have to promote them – even if they hate what they did. So it’s very easily to be misled into thinking a movie will be great. But do they really want you to see the movie to enjoy yourself, or to help make money for the movie? Just sayin’…
And you know, sometimes we hate a movie that just about everyone else loves. Which is fine. No pressure required. Like what you like. But if you want advice, we have a list of movies that are marketed as chick flicks to be loved that we absolutely didn’t.
Your time is precious. Don’t waste it on movies that suck. Give yourself permission to stop watching a movie halfway through if you’re not enjoying it. It’s really the smart thing to do.

Electronic 26-Game Dart Board soft tip with Backlit Display $49.99
I’ve never wanted a super-secret batcave, but if I ever had a secret lair I’d definitely want a dart board. Knowing how to do that is kind of a sexy skill and you can impress people with your talent at aiming. I think you need to go for the real deal, or the soft darts. But magnetic darts? Don’t even bother with them unless you have kids and are afraid the soft darts aren’t soft enough.
Games like these aren’t just for the boys. And buying a dart board is a great alternative to buying a pool table. While some websites might have you believe that the only dart boards worth buying are worth hundreds ... Read More
To Roku or Not to Roku? That is the Question!
Tuesday, January 12th, 2010
Roku, you sly little box. I’m intrigued by you, I’ll admit it. Like everyone on the planet, I have a Netflix subscription. And I love the ‘Netflix Instant Watch’ feature. So then I hear about this Roku thing. And at first I’m like ‘Uh, Roku you, jerk!’ because I had no idea what it was and wanted to seem tough. But I did a little googling and found that Roku is simply a little black box you use to stream movies to your TV via Netflix. Well, that sounds nice enough.
As we love to do on ShesSmart.com, I went to see what the Amazon.com reviews for Roku were. As of the date I’m writing this, there are 254 five star reviews out of 374 reviews total. That’s a lot of people being pleased with this product.
Roku boasts these features:
- Start watching movies on your TV in seconds using your high-speed Internet connection
- Instantly plays the entire Netflix Instant Watch library with your Netflix membership – no additional subscription required, viewing is unlimited
- Instantly plays over 45,000 movies and shows from Amazon Video On Demand
- Built-in wireless (Wi-Fi) and wired internet connectivity
- Plays High Definition as well as DVD-quality vid ... Read More
Do you Prewash New Clothing? Pros/Cons
Saturday, December 26th, 2009
We'd never pre-wash cats! Shopcat would never stand for that. She doesn't even stand for people to look at her funny... (Note: no, Shopcat doesn't grace us in this photo.) Photo by oskay on Flickr.
It’s the day after Christmas and you have all of this new clothing – most of which you’re planning on keeping! Yay. It’s great. Your friends and family know you so well, and they bought stuff you actually like. That’s the biggest battle. But there’s a smaller, mostly unseen battle after that. Prewashing new clothing. Are you pro, or con? We’ll discuss.

PRO prewashing new clothing: I’m a fan of prewashing new clothing.Washing it gets out the fresh dye that might otherwise stain other clothing. It gets off the weird smell from the store and distributing plants that held your clothing before getting to the posh (and not so posh) stores. And it rids you of any germs from other people who may have tried the clothing on. I’m not saying I’m a germaphobe (I am, I’m just not saying it) but this is a smart choice. Also, sometimes a nice ... Read More
Our Other Uses for a Snuggie

Snuggie photo by Calmenda on Flickr.
So you were the unfortunate recipient of a Snuggie this Christmas, huh? And if you can’t return it, you’re wondering what the hell to do with it. That’s where I come in. You have to make the most of the situation. Wondering about the regifting etiquette of a snuggie? It’s never rude to regift them. Ever. They’re the world’s new perpetual White Elephant gift that’ll show up at every holiday party. But before regifting, consider these options…
1. Keep it in your car as a blanket for backseat complainers who don’t like that your car doesn’t have a heater. 2. Drape it over an ugly chair for a brand new look. 3. Wear it while you paint something, to protect your clothing. 4. Planning to streak? Wear this before the event, then shed it easily for your run. 5. This + a mask is the perfect disguise when robbing a bank. (I shouldn’t have to but I must mention: don’t actually do this.) 6. Who needs maternity clothing when you can just have a couple snuggies? 7. Super poor and in college? Use it as a towel, pillowcase, blanket, and curtain. 8. Use ... Read More
