Style Inspirations! Whitney Port’s Silver Party Look

I was watching The City on MTV.com the other night and Whitney Port was in an outfit I LOVED. To recreate the look all you need is a silver dress, pearl earrings, pink lipstick, and black nail polish. The beauty products are easier to find, but you can shop around for the silver dress and pearl earrings. I did some shopping online for you and now I’ll share with you what I found. The thing about the pearl earrings that’s important is that they have a little more to them than just being pearl earrings. You’ll see what I mean.

I may not be a Miley Cyrus fan, but I do like the dress Miley wears in Sex and the City movie 2. Which is a lame move title. Anyway, she’s not the only one who wears the dress, Samantha wears it too. The dress is already in hot demand but after the movie actually plays in theaters it’ll be in even more high demand. As pretty as I think the Matthew Williamson Fall 2009 Futuristic Sequin Cocktail Dress IS, I’m probably not going to fork out the money for it. You can see the Futuristic Sequin Cocktail Dress that is in Sex and the City 2, above. But let’s look at some more realistic options! Because one thing has become clear to me, sparkly party dresses are going to be major for Winter 09.

Anna Sui: Target Collection Picks

Anna Sui for Target Mohair Cardigan – Heather Grey $50. But is it too shapeless? It looks cute, but you can’t really belt it… or can you?

Anna Sui for Target Seersucker Dress w/Lace – Black – $60. This works best on someone with a naturally petite figure. Not good if you have curves like large breasts and pronounced hips. This dress also runs a bit small. It’s something you’d see on Twiggy! Only hers would be white with big black shiny buttons.

Anna Sui for Target Lace Halter Dress – Black $70. If you look at the detail up close the lace is really cool and I like this dress a lot. Pair it with a wrist full of bangles and some (or all) of your hair pulled back/up.

Anna Sui for Target Acrylic Glencheck Plaid Vest – Black/Gray $20. This is such a great, versatile piece. I LOVE vests. It’s so affordable, too. You can wear this all through fall and winter. Wear long-sleeved shirts under it, and then pile a cardigan over it. And then add some long necklaces! Boho librarian chic? Totally.

And let’s make fun of the rest of the collection!

Those are the only items that I really like that Anna Sui has done for Target. You would really be asking for trouble if you got the Tulle Top. I mean, on the runway this might be able to look cool. Reality? Weird. Reminds me a little of a French airplane stewardess or something. It’s trampy. Uh, not that I’m calling all French stewardesses trampy…

I WANT to like this patterned dress because the neckline is cute, but it’s so unmistakable that once you’ve seen it, you’ve seen it. And then you’re just the girl with the dress that everyone else has.

I have no idea what Anna Sui was thinking putting out this cotton top thing… It’s so unflattering. If you designed this for Project Runway, Tim Gunn would be making such a trouble face. It looks like bulky armor – no, tacky armor.

Look Thinner with Colorblock Dresses and Colorblock Skirts

The use of colorblock in clothing is genius. It can really trick the eye into making you look a lot more thin and shapely than you are. I was realizing this the other day when Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) was wearing a colorblock dress on Gossip Girl and it made her waist look so nipped and fit. When you type or say colorblocking enough times, it starts looking and sounding weird. But the actual color blocking effect? It’s genius!

How does colorblocking work? Visual magic! It uses blocks of color to shape you. As you know, white looks larger and black makes things look smaller. But more than that, you can actually sculpt the form using wide lines or thin lines of color down the middle of a dress. Be smart: color block!

Bargain News! Sweater Dresses on Sale

I love sweater dresses. But sweaters are expensive. And dresses are expensive. So much sweater dresses are – you must be a genius because you guessed it – expensive. But I worked to find you sweater dresses on sale for under $100.

Sweater dresses for fall are perfect to wear all the time. You can also wear them for winter, these sweater dresses are great with boots and tights. Sweater dresses and tights? Love it. Sweater dresses and boots? Love it.

Victoria’s Secret is loaded with sweater dresses, but most of them are 1) Way too form fitting/sexy to want to wear without being self-conscious, 2) Way too expensive! This is why Victoria’s Secret Sweater Dresses are mostly a no-go for me. However I did find one that I like a lot and included down below, it’s a gorgeous chocolate brown color and looks like it would move well. It has enough detail to make it interesting, but it’s all in a solid color so you can layer it with accessories like crazy (rings, tights, boots, hats, whatever).

Urban Outfit Discount: Urban Outfitters Dresses on Sale!

Urban Outfitters makes great, chic clothing for teens and people in their 20’s. If you aren’t sure of Urban Outfit locations, you can always go to their website Urbn.com. The stores are full of funky jewelry, large leather handbags with fringe, candles that smell like papayas, neon pink alarm clocks shaped like owls, and the kind of clothing that instantly makes you feel more hip. Most urbn outfit dresses are upwards of $60.00, but there is a sale going on right now where tons and tons of dresses are on sale. That seems like a good occasion for shopping – or at least a good occasion to take a look and see what they have.

A lot of these dresses can be worn in the fall as long as you wear some textured tights and a cardigan over them (maybe even a wool hat). Others you may want simply because next Spring similar dresses will be on sale for $60.00 again, and you’ll have missed out on a deal. (Regret sucks, and I feel like I ALWAYS learn this the hard way.)

Bargain News! BCBG on Sale

I’ve loved BCBG from even before what I knew much about the line. Max Azria has a daughter and her bedroom was featured in Seventeen Magazine when I was a teen who got that magazine. All of her clothing was mostly black and white, organized in a huge closet. And her room was mostly all white, except her Dad had encouraged her to paint her bedroom walls yellow… Anyway – I just remember loving her room and wishing my Dad was also a fashion designer. Which…would be hilarious because his idea of style is changing into clean jeans. Cue an eye roll here.

These days, BCBG Max Azria dresses are sought after for their style and fit. I really wish there was a BCBG Max Azria outlet near me, but alas there is not. But, shopping online has perks – like scouring for BCBG sale items!

I recommend shopping for items that you really love, don’t just buy something because it’s on sale. Classic pieces with an added element of flair (like interesting draping) are great. There’s a great BCBG dress I’ve included, and it’s black. But instead of being just a black dress, it’s a really well-made dress that will accentuate your body unlike some dresses.

Another piece I picked was the orange dress you see below, which is a great pop of color for your spring and summer wardrobe. In fact, wear it for fall by layering it with a plaid shirt, oversized gray cardigan, textured tights, and boots.

Urban Outfitters is a great, hip, store. But it’s pricey, too. Ergo, we shop the Urban Outfitters sales! What do I look for when I see the rows of items with an urban outfit discount? That’s easy! Items you can still incorporate to your wardrobe right now, items you’ll wear next season, items drastically marked down, things you’ll always need (you wear a bra daily, yes?) – stuff like that. Good ol’ Urban outfit stocks plenty of great things – like the tater pots you see above! If there’s an Urban Outfit outlet near you, I highly suggest you get thee to it. Summer Dresses on Sale

Since Fall is here, stores are rushing to get their summer dresses off the shelves completely. That works out in your favor. Because the only thing that’s more refreshing than cute summer dresses is cute summer dresses on sale. Obviously it’s best to avoid anything trendy, which can be tricky. If you’ve been eying something all season and it’s finally on sale you will feel a strange (okay, maybe it’s not so strange) and strong pull to pick it up now that it’s at a reduced price.

However, keep in mind that this was what you loved, and saw on other people, this season. Style Tip: Make sure to honestly ask yourself if it was a passing trend that you might not be wearing next year.
