Auric Blends Reviews & Giveaway: So Many Gorgeous Scents to Love Up On!

by on Friday, September 17th, 2010

I’m not sure if I can adequately explain to you how joyful I felt when I opened up a big package full of goodies from Auric Blends. Their packaging is so sweet, and the products are all beautiful and — it just made me smile and feel special. So, to be sure, I would recommend Auric Blends as a great gift to give (to yourself, or others!)

The company sent me samples of their perfumes to review. When asked what I most wanted to sample, I knew exactly my answer: Egyptian Goddess perfume, please! I’ve never smelled it before now, but people RAVE about it. It’s a cult favorite. And I really wanted to know why. And now that I do, I’m going to pass my information onto you.

First, just a tiny bit of history on Auric Blends, because I really think it’s cool. The company was started in 1993, they have millions of loyal fans, and the base of operations is in a tiny historic town in Northern California. I’m going to quote from their website, “We are surrounded by vineyards, redwood trees and the cool coastal air that comes in from neighboring Bodega Bay. It’s a majestic and beautiful place that inspires us to create.” Doesn’t that sound amazing? I want to live there if I can’t find a real life Stars Hollow (Gilmore Girls reference.)

Auric blends sells perfume oils for men and women, perfume solids, and incense. Please take a look at their bestsellers if you find yourself curious. I am going to divide this into a review of scents, and review of product types. Tiny samples are available for all of these scents!

Product Types:

Perfume Oil, 1.87 oz. – At first I was wondering why there wasn’t a spray nozzle. But then I remembered – duh – that’s not the best way to apply essential oil perfumes. You unscrew the cap of this generous bottle, and then dab away. $24.

Perfume Oil, 1/3 ounce – Here, you get a roller ball on the glass vial, and I like that a lot because it’s super easy to apply. These are very affordable at only $7.

Perfume Solid 1/5 ounce – These come in really beautiful hand-carved pots of soapstone. (You’ll keep these forever.) They’re perfect to display on a vanity. The top is heavy, so the one con is that these aren’t portable in a purse since you can’t screw the cap on. But the pro is that when I sit at my vanity and lift up one of the tops, I feel like I’m living in a romantic Renaissance novel as a courtesan with all sorts of potions and vials. Pretty as I think these are, it was hard for me to really get a sense of scent from them. I would get the vials over these. $8.

Auric Blends Scent Descriptions and My Personal Reviews:

Auric Blends Egyptian Goddess review – Let’s just say that I definitely understand why this is the #1 best seller. You won’t go wrong with this mix of “soft florals, light powder and musk.” Despite how that sounds, this is a cozy, seductive scent that lingers on you all day. It’s a natural sort of scent, clean, and unfussy. You will get tons of compliments. It has FANTASTIC staying power. I will wear this when I want to be confident.

Auric Blends Love review – This is another beautiful scent that I very much adore. J’adore! It’s flowery, without reminding me of a Grandmother perfume. This is made with “elements of Egyptian Goddess and White Amber.” It’s the #2 best-seller on their site. There’s a bit of spice to the amber. It gives you that warm feeling of being loved. I will wear this when I want a hug.

Auric Blends Chinese Rain review: I enjoy this scent, but I don’t think I would ever wear it every day. It’s light and fresh, just like you’d expect. It smelled a little soapy at first, but then the florals win out. This is a very fresh scent – and if that is your favorite sort of smell, this is great for you. I like to wear clean scents like this in the morning because it inspires me to clean and make everything orderly. Described as a musk with florals, amber and sandalwood and fresh greens. This is a very subtle scent. I will wear it when I’m hoping to clean things, meditate, or be contemplative.

Auric Blends Water Lily review: I would group this as similar to Chinese Rain. It’s a fresh scent, and a little less subtle than Rain. There’s a whiff of sweet grass. It makes me want to look at Claude Monet paintings. It’s a little too bright for me to wear daily, but that’s just me. There’s some floral musk to it (jasmine, rose, germanium.) It reminds me of early spring. I will wear this when it’s the middle of winter and I’m depressed about no flowers.

Auric Blends Divine Opium review: Oriental and spicy! This scent has cinnamon, pepper, carnation, rose, jasmine, vanilla and patchouli. This is what I call a dark, earthy, exotic scent. It reminds me of going to unique coffee houses and sitting on velvet couches, talking about foreign films. It’s a touch strong. I will wear this when I make chai tea and put on the Amelie DVD.

Auric Blends Coco Mango review: An instant favorite of mine! This combines coconut and mango. I happen to love coconut and mango! It’s a summer scent, but I’ll wear this anytime I want to feel happy. Have you ever had mango juice? It’s delicious.

Auric Blends Layla review: This is from their new line of Natural – 100% natural essential oil perfumes! Layla looked like it’d be my favorite out of the four. It’s a “woodsy floral” inspired by Persia and  The Tale of Layla & Majnun. Each scent has a tale associated with it. They’re very beautiful stories. It has Bulgarian rose, orange flower blossom, sandalwood and a bit of spice. Rose scents, for me, are hit or miss. Sadly, for me, my nose hasn’t warmed up to this rose scent. If you like rose scents, I think you will like this one. Other reviews I’ve read of this are positive. I didn’t hate it, it’s just not the scent I’d reach for  first. As I wore it for a bit, the rose notes did calm down a bit and it felt like a romantic scent. I will wear this when I want to settle into bed and read a novel with some tragic romance.

Auric Blends White Gardenia review: This is soft, sweet, and light. Very airy. Not incredibly strong, but probably just the right amount for this sweet gardenia scent. I will wear this dabbed on my wrists and fingers (yes!) when I want to have pleasant dreams.

Auric Blends Starr Jasmine review: There is something about this soft scent I really, really like. It’s intoxicating and addictive. This is the full description, “Jasmine, fresh muguet and soft florals touched by green and sparkling top notes.  Sandalwood added to round out the base.”

Auric Blends Amber Butter review: This is a rich, warm scent. This is in a hand-carved rosewood pot. The top screws on. It’s beautiful-looking. I like this scent a lot, and it almost reminds me of the reasons I like the Starr Jasmine. The texture of this is different than the solid perfumes that have a base of beeswax and coconut oil. This is a little grainier, you apply the resin just like a solid perfume – and it does soften. It’s a unique, wonderful experience.

You can read all of the fragrance descriptions for the perfumes here. But there is also the Naturals collection, too!

You should definitely check out the Auric Blends site. There are many more scents, and I’m sure you’d find one you like. And the prices are so reasonable – under $10 for a large vial! It’s fun to play with new scents. And I really liked all of these a lot more than some more popular celebrity-endorsed fragrances. (I tend to like natural-based scents that don’t smell synthetic. A lot of designer fragrances turn me off because they smell so fake.)

You can purchase items from their website,, and at Whole Foods.

P.S. They even have henna kits you can buy. *Whimpers* I want, I want! Or would I look dumb?

Disclosure: I received samples to review, but was not compensated in any other way for my opinion.
