Last week we wrote about a rising musical talent – Lindsey Ray. Not only do we love her music, but we really love her style as well. She was kind enough to take part in our first Celebrity Virtual Closet on She’s Smart! In this exclusive interview, we talked to Lindsey about where she loves to shop, surprising fashion icons and how L.A. changed the way she viewed clothing. We also have a photographic tour inside of her closet, and some of her favorite things.

Ten Questions with Lindsey Ray

How would you define your sense of style?

Girlie with a hint of sophistication

Where are your favorite places to shop? Don’t just stick to clothing, housewares, etc.

If I’m looking for not too expensive trendy pieces I’ll go to Forever 21. I used to have a real addiction to this store. Even when I lived in Maine I shopped here online. It’s great for cute dresses and tops.

If I’m feeling like I wanna splurge on myself I always go to Anthropologie. That place makes me so happy! I’m addicted. If money was endless, I would shop there almost exclusively.

I also love Urban Outfitters. I happen to live very close to one which is dangerous for my purse. I try to limit myself!

There’s a great shoe store where I’ve been able to find unique vintage looking heels called Sheikh Shoes. I like to shoe shop on their website. Shoe are a big statement for me. I like to have something a little funky and unique. I’m a sucker for mary jane’s in any color. Love them!

Betsy Johnson is also a fun place for me to find dresses for my shows. In fact I have one really adorable dress from Betsy Johnson that I have to make a point NOT to wear at every special occasion. It’s just so cute!! I feel like Alice in Wonderland when I have it on.

There’s a little boutique called Francesca’s that has great purses and jewelry that I also love.

For household needs, I love stores like Crate and Barrel. I love cooking so I’m always drawn to the cooking pans and serveware! Green and yellow serving bowls!! I love bright colors. Can ya tell?

I’m also a little Monica Geller-ish ( You know the character from the sitcom Friends who is OCD when it comes to cleanliness and organization?) so I love The Container Store too. The first time I walked in to that store I almost had a heart-attack! So many ways to organize my things! Boxes of all sizes. It’s too much. I can’t handle it! I love it.

What would you say are the strongest themes that run through your wardrobe?

Color color and color. I have a lot of greens, blues and pinks in my closet. Also lots of cute dresses as I prefer to be in a dress with tights than in jeans. If I’m wearing black, I’ll have a splash of color somewhere. Either on my feet or on a belt or scarf. My accessories are almost always silver if on my hands or wrists and I like long layered necklaces that I can either wear tied in a knot or doubled up and chunky.

How organized would you say you are when it comes to your closet? Are all dresses grouped-together, or do you feel lucky when they’re all at least hanging in the closet rather than the floor? Do you use anything specific, cool or unusual to keep your shoes/purses/jewelry stored?

My closet is VERY organized. To someone else it may not appear that way, but all of my show dresses and coats are to the left, the middle are the tops or dresses I wear the most, and the far right clothing is stuff I rarely wear but haven’t had the heart to give away quite yet. I keep all of my shoes neatly on a shoe rack and my jewelry in a cute vintage looking jewelry box on my dresser.

Have you always liked to dress up? Did you play in your Mother’s closet as a child?

You know it’s funny because I guess there were times when I’d try on my mother’s fur coats that she had in her closet or times when my big sister was out of the house that I would go into her closet and admire her clothing but I wouldn’t say I was much of a dress up gal. I really wasn’t even all that girlie until a few years ago. Growing up in Maine where the weather doesn’t really allow for cute heels much of the time, I dressed pretty plain. (Jeans and sweaters or plain shirts.) I always wanted to dress up more but whenever I shopped online and did so, I would feel very out of place in my town and get unwanted comments from people. It wasn’t until I moved to LA that I felt free to wear whatever I want and make it my own. There are so many unique types of people in LA. There’s really no way to be too different and I love that!! I wear whatever I want whenever I want and I never feel out of place. It’s a great thing about living in a big city. Plus there are so many more stores to shop at! I had never even heard of Anthropologie until I moved here and now it’s my favorite place to shop.

I am especially loving the look of your EP cover and your official website. Were you able to give a lot of input into how that looked? It matches your personality and style so well.

Yes, absolutely! I was very involved in the design of my website. I made it clear that I didn’t want to take myself too seriously. I’m a pretty easy-going upbeat girl so I wanted something that reflected that part of me. The animated animals that pop out when you click on the different sections made me laugh and I loved the silliness of it. I was lucky enough to work with a very talented design company called Stump’d Design and they were the ones who made that come to life for me. For the EP cover, I was immediately drawn to the color and pattern of the design which was why I went with it for the cover. It just fit the music. I’m glad you think so too!

Let’s talk style icons. Is there anyone – famous or not – that inspires you?

Yes, I love the way Elizabeth Hasselbeck is styled on The View. She’s always dressed in either an adorable colorful dress or a great ruffled blouse with skinny jeans and heels. Almost every time I see that show I think “I want that outfit!”

I also think Mandy Moore has a great sense of style when I see her in magazines. I feel like she always has a very sophisticated feminine style while still being trendy.

Online shopping vs. In-store shopping: which do you prefer?

Hmmm… well, I guess I’d have to say in-store shopping because I really like to try everything on before I buy it.

Do you have an item you wear for good luck?

I do! I have a silver necklace that has some of my father’s ashes in it that I wear for good luck or when I feel like I need him with me that day. It also happens to be very stylish too!

Are you following any trends right now?

Not on purpose, but I’m sure without even knowing it I am.

This first one is an example of an Anthropologie shirt that I love. Colorful, girlie and sophisticated. I paired it with my favorite necklace ( from Forever 21). I love this necklace because I can tie it in a knot like I did here or double it up like you'll see later. : )

Here's a close up of the rings I wear every day! I love the uniqueness of these rings and I always wear silver on my hands. The funkier the ring the better! I've worn this star ring every single day since my brother gave it to me on my 18th birthday.

Here's another outfit I love. Once again a very girlie blouse from Anthropologie and I paired it with black dress shorts and black patterned tights. (Black patterned tights are my favorite wardrobe piece. Can't live without them!) The outfit is completed with mint colored heel from Urban Outfitters. I love the pop of color on my feet. : )

This next outfit is something I would wear to go out at night. A simple cute top with a bright colored skirt, black tights and my taupe heels.

I also like to wear a black blazer with this for when it gets chilly outside. I think every girl should have a rockin' black blazer in their closet. This one is from Urban Outfitters. I think it's called the boyfriend blazer. It fits great and has a silky/satin lining inside! : )

A big thank-you to Lindsey Ray, as well as Mary Broome at Sideways Media.
