The April Smith Virtual Closet (Tutu’s, Dior, Vintage!)
Welcome, welcome to our second edition of the She’s Smart Virtual Closet Series. This time we talked to April Smith, of the musical act April Smith and The Great Picture Show. Their song “Terrible Things” is featured in the Weeds season 6 promo.
How would you define your sense of style?
I have a very costume-y style…big skirts, feathers, heels. A little cabaret, a little Victorian…a mix of old styles.
Where are your favorite places to shop?
I love to go to Beacon’s Closet and Stella Dallas in Williamsburg. Vintage shops are always a good bet.
What are the strongest themes that run through your wardrobe?
Tutus and great shoes…those are the staples.
How organized is your closet?
All of my dresses have their own rack…it’s getting out of control! The tutus have to have their own giant bag too.
Are you following any trends right now?
I like to make a lot of my outfits myself. I’ll buy a piece, take it apart and put it back together so that it suits my style.
I love Betsey Johnson and Alexander McQueen. I love Steve Madden’s Madden girl line for shoes too.
Do you have an item you wear for good luck?
Yes, my owl necklace given to me by my dear friend, Alyssa. It’s my favorite!
Do you prefer online shopping or brick-and-mortar shopping?
I’d love to shop from home because I’m not a fan of scanning racks and dealing with crowds. Often times I know I want a specific thing and I’ll try to go to a place that has exactly what I’m looking for. I’m all about convenience when it comes to shopping. But, unfortunately, vintage style that fits properly is hard to find online.
What are your favorite makeup/beauty products right now?
Christian Dior Airflash is the one thing I can’t live without. It’s my guilty pleasure.
Three of your fashion “must-haves” of the moment?
Right now I’m a fan of sheer fabrics, short skirts and steampunk jewelry.
