In the same way that mothers of teenage Mom’s were told to have their daughters watch Mean Girls, I think Mom’s (and Dad’s) or kids in middle school should know about this new DVD release for the movie Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It is based on a best-selling novel by Jeff Kinney, and that novel started off as online cartoons.

I was surprised I hadn’t heard of it yet, because the novel sold over 30 million copies and spent three years on The New York Times’ children’s best-seller list. Even though I’m personally not much for reading or finding too many children’s books, I think this is something worth talking about.

Based on the best-selling illustrated novel by Jeff Kinney, the family comedy Diary of a Wimpy Kid arrives on Blu-ray Disc/DVD Combo Pack and DVD August 3 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. The film chronicles the adventures of wisecracking pre-teen Greg Heffley, who must somehow survive the scariest time of anyone’s life… middle school. Convinced it’s the “dumbest idea ever invented,” Heffley considers junior high school a place rigged with hundreds of social landmines, not the least of which are wedgies, swirlies, bullies, lunchtime banishment of the cafeteria floor and a festering piece of cheese with nuclear cooties that he must overcome to become popular. His diary – or “journal” – chronicles his thoughts, tales of family trials and tribulations, and (would be) schoolyard triumphs.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid features rising stars Zachary Gordon (National Treasure: Book of Secrets), Robert Capron (Bride Wars) and Rachael Harris (The Hangover), as well as Steve Zahn (“Treme”).

The Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack and standard DVD will be available for the suggested retail price of $39.99 U.S and $29.98 U.S., respectively. It will be available to purchase on August 3, 2010.
