Life Unexpected Lux Style: Season 2

Criminal Incriminated

Do you love Lux Cassidy (Britt Robertson) on Life Unexpected? Sometimes she seriously annoys me, but she has that hip Seattle style down pat!I love her Life Unexpected clothes a lot.

Whoever is the costume designer to pick the Life Unexpected clothing items for Lux is very smart and considerate. Lux’s outfits are both covetable and look affordable, even if you don’t use exact clothing matches.

What Lux does is layer a ton of things. Harness Lux’s look with a few key style elements. She isn’t a sloppy dresser, but she dresses to look casual for the cool Portland atmosphere. Here, she’s layered a funky tank under an off the shoulder shirt, and layered a long pendant necklace over that. She’s got her ever-present knit beret on, a large messenger bag, and dark denim jeans. While we can’t see them in this picture, I’d bet she’s also wearing her large hoops. Wear some light lip gloss for the full effect.

Dress like Blair Waldorf for Less: Polka Dot Dress in Paris

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Double Identity

Go Parisian with Blair Waldorf’s (Leighton Meester) style choice for her trip. Here, we see her wearing a white dress with large black (or are they navy?) polka dots. The dress I found (for less) has a romantic edge to it because doesn’t just cling to the body, it has ruffles and layers. You might also consider this Tahari Dress, this Polka Dot Puff Sleeve Top, or this Silk Blouse.

I’m not sure Blair would wear these heels if she knew they were by Steve Madden, but I loved the rich look they give, so I included them. The  Jessica McClintock purse I do like, although now I think that’s not the b ... Read More

Sarah Walker Clothing: Wienerlicious Outfit for Halloween

Chuck

Ever wanted to dress like Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski) from Chuck? It’s a great Halloween costume idea!

I greatly preferred Sarah’s first cover job at The Weinerlicious. Yogurt, Yogurt (Orange, Orange?) was just not as fun! I found a couple costumes (most of them are so tacky/hoochie that I passed them up), and then just some elements you can put together for her awesome outfit. It has a white peasant blouse, ideally with short cap sleeves and the ability to show some cleavage. Then there’s a black corset belt deal. You could just cut off the bottom of a black t-shirt to improvise. Then there’s the red skirt. You want it to be kind of fluffy, so use a tulle skirt under if you have just a red skirt. I found a ton of different red skirts that might work for you.

As for shoes, she wore black flats (the better to pummel badguys in!) with elastic straps. Her hair was always in pigtails – anchored at the middle of the back of her head, and back/out, not just from the side of her head. Oh, and I included a hotdog necklace! And you can make the nametag, and carry a water or foam dart gun!

For Sarah’s makeup, focus on her dark eyebrows and some black mascara.

Gossip Girl Fashion for Less: Blair’s Red Dress in Paris

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

Double Identity

The red ruffle dress Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) wears on Gossip Girl in Paris is by Oscar de la Renta. But, since getting that dress is both impossible and impractical, I went looking for something more wearable for your average gal. What I found was a modern red dress with ruffle detailing for under $30. More than reasonable. And it’s of European design! Dress like Blair Waldorf for less, it might not be so hard.

Blair also wears a necklace. Something sparkly will do. But with this dress’s neckline, the exact similar sort of circular necklace wouldn’t look right.

In her hand, Blair has a long purple clutch. I know that red and purple can look fun together, but DEAR GOD why did she have this purple clutch? It should be black or oh God, any other color. I’d take blue or yellow or anything else. I think the problem is that it’s not even purple. It’s a magenta – not quite a pink. It just clashes. I refused to do purple, and gave you a cool red clutch instead. (She’s also wearing flip flops. Since ... Read More

Nina Dobrev Style Guide: Front Zipper Skirt

nina dobrev style guide

Nina Dobrev of The Vampire Diaries was recently interviewed (and did a photoshoot) for Saturday Night Magazine. In the above photo, Nina is wearing a front zipper skirt in black from Charlotte Ronson. I found a ton of zippered skirts – all similar. Some are steals for only $20, other are major splurges. I just wanted to show them all off to you guys. I think a front zipper skirt is a majorly fun item to wear this fall. (But I also think that making s’mores in the microwave is fun.)

Make sure to check out our first Nina Dobrev post: How to Dress Like Nina Dobrev in The Vampire Diaries

For photoshoots, there’s always a ton of clothing to pick from. A stylist will help, but usually a celebrity has say in what they end up wearing. So it stands to reason that Miss Nina Dobrev really did like this front zipper skirt – and why not? It’ ... Read More

Katherine Pierce Dresses on The Vampire Diaries

katherine pierce costumes

In 1864, Katherine Pierce was a Southern Belle. With her costumes, you can see she is wearing crinoline’s. A crinoline is also called a hoop skirt – I betcha know what those are! They were very popular in the 1800’s. They were like cages…and they would sway. It was all about having full skirts. Extra flounces (ruffles!) on skirts were added to make them appear even fuller. The idea was to have your skirt look like a doom or a teapot. Waists were very tiny and defined.

Hair in the 1860’s included lots of curled ringlets. Hats were smaller now, as women carried parasol’s. But they still wore decorative hats with flowers, feathers and ribbons – worn at the crown of the head. As you see, Katherine wore a small hat perched near the front of her face, over what was an expansive hairstyle – as was the trend of this era.

If you’re looking to dress like Katherine Pierce for Halloween, I suggest not buying one of the Southern Belle costumes that are around. There seem to be about only 7 standard dresses on every costume site. They’re all (with the exception of one, which I linked below) kind of gaudy with bright colors. They seem…cheesy, you know? And Katherine was elegant. And so are you, dammit! So, my suggestion is to hit up a rental place (again ... Read More

Covert Affairs Clothes: Zipper Leggings on Annie Walker

covert-affairs-fashion

I love this Covert Affairs poster of Piper Perabo as Annie Walker. In it, she sports really kicky zipper leggings. They’ve actually become quite popular. Put some Covert Affairs fashion into you wardrobe with a pair, okay? Yes, do it! Don’t be afraid! It’ll let you show off a really great pair of shoes. And we all know that Annie’s Covert Affairs shoes are very wonderful.

Covert Affairs Clothes and Shoes: Annie Walker’s Dress

Covert Affairs Clothes

So, about a million people have e-mailed us asking about a particular blue and white bandanna dress (i.e. covert affairs blue/white shirtdress or covert affairs black/white print dress) that Piper Perabo wears as Annie Walker on Covert Affairs. As stated on our style request form (and what is apparent if you read us!) we don’t look up and find exact designer matches. The episode that you just saw of Covert Affairs was probably shot at least four months ago – meaning the same designs are not often in stores anymore. And that isn’t even taking into account the fact that the items on TV shows are always much more expensive than what your average gal can spend. (Not always. But very often.)

Covert Affairs Clothes

Because there were so many requests, I decided I had to do SOMETHING, and found some similar dresses.I hope you appreciate my hard work! I have really sore thumbs because I did the unthinkable tonight and made mussels – meani ... Read More

Covert Affairs Clothes: Annie’s Cute Sporty Outfit in Fool in the Rain

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

annie walker covert affairs

The fact that I don’t really buy/wear tons of sporty gear is probably one of the reasons I couldn’t really fill this Covert Affairs fashion request as well as I’d like. Of course, I spent a LONG time looking through my resources, and trying different keywords to find if not THE exact track jacket on Annie in “Fool in the Rain” – something similar that I liked. Maybe I just don’t like track jackets? At any rate, blergh!

This request came to us from Lindsay, 25. She knew the pants were Adidas, but noted that the, “cute jacket had no logo!” And that’s a problem! What she liked about this jacket was that it was “trendy, and not basic.”

Covert Affairs clothes for Ms. Annie Walker in this episode were really fun since it was a vacation episode. High-fives for everyone who’s a fan of Annie’s clothing. Or Danielle’s – she wears great stuff, too.

Well, Lindsay. I did my best with similar items. ….And THEN I thought about why you liked the outfit. And that’s because it was a step-up from the predictable stuff you see everywhere. And so that inspired me to go further in my search to find cute sporty outfits. To me, it’s  just about selecting cute separate ... Read More

Modern Spin: How to Dress Like Dorothy from The Wizard of OZ

how to dress like dorothy

Here’s our post about How to dress like Dorothy, and it’s full of twists on the tradition that you expect. I was lucky to come across a dress (which inspired this entire piece – which otherwise wasn’t going to happen because I was so intent on first covering Alice in Wonderland after finally watching the recent Tim Burton movie) named after Dorothy herself. It has the perfect blue gingham pattern, but it doesn’t look dowdy.

For the shoes, I didn’t pick sparkly ones. Gasp! I instead picked a pair that was a little more flexible on theme, and wouldn’t make you look like OH HI, I AM WEARING A COSTUME TODAY. So they have just a bit of a heel, and are red maryjanes. I love them! Dorothy carries around a picnic basket, but how stylish is THAT? For the bag I picked a woven, tan-colored piece. And then there are two necklace options which feature either Toto or a bicycle (remember the beginning of the movie?)

Another suggestion to incorporate is bypassing the movieR ... Read More
