Katherine Heigl Accidentally Dresses like an American Girl Doll

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

katherine heigl style

Katherine Heigl was out on the red carpet for an event looking like she was inspired by none other than the American Girl Kirstin. I remember when I thought these were cool, and Samantha was my favorite. I did a book report on one of the Kirstin books called “Kirstin Saves the Day” wherein “Kirsten discovers a bee tree packed with honeycomb. She tries to bring the honey home but has to compete with a family of bears for her treasure, too!” I remember drawing her, and she wore a pale blue and white striped sundress in this book.

What’s even more alarming is that apparently they have discontinued the Kirstin Larson line from American Girl. WHAT! She was awesome! Protip? Don’t dress like an AG doll. It doesn’t work.

star trek baby clothing

If you’re an awesome person who just happens to also be a mother, why not let everyone know that your kid is awesome, too? There is too much awesome going on to contain it! I found some star trek specific items, and then general geek stuff. But I was not able to find any Doctor Who baby clothes, which was disappointing!

Kristen Bell from Lucky.com

Kristen Bell from Lucky.com

If you read this blog then you know that 1) I already posted once today 2) I adore Kristen Bell. Thing 2 is why I am changing thing 1 by posting twice. ARE YOU CONFUSED? Look, it’s Kristen Bell in a video for Toms Shoes! Today is One Day Without Shoes. Toms Shoes are great, so pick up a pair. (The red ones are a great splash of color to add to an outfit, and look great with jeans.) For every pair of Toms Shoes sold, the company donates a pair to a child in need.

Kristen went barefoot today. If she had been in Egypt, she would have been barefoot there.

I don’t know why whoever scored this video made it sound like she was in a Chinese cartoon, but here you go!

Whip it, whip it good!

It’s 2010 but there’s still sexism. I believe the first and most important thing you can do to lessen any amount of sexism in the world today is to not let it happen to yourself (meaning, don’t let someone grab your ass and then not call them on the inappropriateness of that action – unless it was your husband doing it and you liked it).

If you don’t say or do anything, then you’re letting someone in the world think it’s okay to treat a woman like that. You might wonder why I’m thinking about this. Well, it happened to me this past weekend. I went to one of those electronic stores (the name is unimportant because this was a person-specific issue, not a company one) with a male friend. I was out there to buy a laptop because my old one had broken (tragic!). I’m no computer genius, but I know enough to get by. I already had an idea of what I wanted, and of what I wanted to pay.  I felt prepared. I was going to zip in and out in under an hour due to my thoughtful preparation!

But it did not happen so smoothly. And let me just add this bit of irony: the laptop I initially was going to buy in the first five ... Read More

Lifetime has a new movie premiering this April called At Risk. This is the first time a movie has been made out of the super-popular, highly-reviewed, best-selling crime novels by Patricia Cornwall. At Risk was a number one New York Times bestseller, so it’s likely that at least a couple of your friends have read it. And won’t they be colored the prettiest shade of green (read: jealous)  if they see that you’ve won the amazing prize we have for you… *Rubs hands together menacingly — but also sweetly!*

Surprising Relationship Revelations By Someone with ‘Love’ in Their Name

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

jennifer love hewitt web md

Because I was recently in a Dr’s waiting room, I got a copy (it was free, I did not steal it!) of the Web MD magazine. I liked it because it had Jennifer Love Hewitt on the cover, and I’ve always loved her. I’m actually watching some Ghost Whisperer season 1 episodes these days, just for funsies. Anyway. Jennifer is promoting the show (which I thought had been canceled, oops) as well as her new book “The Day I Shot Cupid: Hello, My Name Is Jennifer Love Hewitt and I’m a Love-aholic”. It’s kind of a mouthful, and I don’t like generic self-help books (though I love the ... Read More

Nora Ephron is an Overlooked Role Model

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

julie and julia

Nora Ephron wears a lot of hats – director, producer, screenwriter, novelist, journalist, blogger… And she’s very well known even if you aren’t aware of it. Her name is attached to some of our favorite movies. Voila: Julie & Julia,  Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, Mixed Nuts (YOU MUST SEE THIS), You’ve Got Mail (I rewatch this every couple of years)… So yea, obviously she likes working with fantastic women i.e Meg Ryan, Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. Strong women are drawn to strong women!

Since I’m a movie fiend, I’m more familiar with her movies than her novels:

The Board Game That’s Inherently Nifty Because Kristen Bell Plays It

Friday, March 12th, 2010

kristenbell

Did Kristen Bell make Bananagrams cool, or did Bananagrams make Kristen Bell cool? THAT IS THE QUESTION. Well, the first question I had was ‘what is banana grams?’ Like any modern girl, I went straight to YouTube for my answer. Turns out it’s a really simple word game that is kind of like boggle. I heard about this game because Kristen Bell told OK Magazine, “…I did just play an intense game of Bananagrams with my sisters…till the wee, small hours of the morning.”

Mastermind Toys said they love it because it’s portable and you can play it at your home or at “the cottage”. Well, we don’t all have summer cottages on lakes, but if you’ll be visiting any family members this summer at THEIRS, this might be a lifesaver. Banangrams could actually be the answer to every awkward question.

Question: “So, are you seeing anyone right now? What happened to that boyfriend with the mohawk?”

Real answer: You can already hear the disdain in their voice, and the follow-up questions w ... Read More
