How to get the Gwen Stefani Summer 2010 look

gwen stefani instyle uk 2010

Gwen Stefan is the cover girl for the July 2010 issue of Instyle UK. A singer, mother, fashion designer, wife… she wears a lot of hats. But if you follow her advice, all of those hats will be fiercely loved and stylish. What’d be the point in wearing one you don’t love? (It’s a metaphor, people!)

Celebrate every day. Every day is a holiday.

Gwen Stefani Instyle UK July 2010

Today we’re celebrating the fierce fashion of Gwen Stefani. The magazine hits stands in the UK on June 3, but we have a sneak peek.

On being a fashion addict: “It’s been the same my whole life. I made so many clothes growing up and I used to do my own costumes. Like, in college – we’d have a concert coming up and all I would do was daydream about what I was going to make. It’s the same now. Fashion gets me so excited.”

On making the move from musician to designer: “I wanted so badly to have a backup plan for when I’m not performing any more. Let’s be realistic ... Read More

How to celebrate summer and lose weight in your backyard

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Add swimming to your workout plan for summer!

It’s summer, and so many of us are not lucky enough to own our own pools. Which makes me kinda angry at the celebrities who have pools but are never home to use them – ever! Since building an in-ground pool will run you about 50,000 at least, that’s not an option to consider for most of us. Including me. Above ground pools are also expensive, especially since you have to build a fence with a pool. But there is one option to consider if you don’t want to drive your kids or yourself to a community pool every day.

Celebrate life everyday! Everyday is a holiday.

Today we’re celebrating the fact that a type of swimming pool is affordable for your own backyard! I’m talking about the above-ground pools that are only about 15 feet in length and four feet tall. If you swim around the perimeter or use goggles to dive for pennies they can be a lot of fun. And really, you’re getting as much space with one as you’d get in a populated community pool.

Your daily challenge from the She’s Smart blog:

It’s summer. No matter where you do it (pool/lake/ocean) you should consider taking a dip. As we get older, the fears about how we look (the verdict: always bad, it seems!) makes us stay out of swimsuits and out of the water. But you’re forgetting that 1) swimm ... Read More

How to dress like Amy Pond from Doctor Who

Wanna know how to dress like Amy Pond? Keep reading. Photo: BBC

Recently I’ve been writing with upbeat music in the background. Silly stuff, really. Like Girls Aloud or Kylie Minogue.  Music has a way of enhancing your emotions, and I try to harness the happy ones so my writing can be cheerful. Today, though, I’m having a bad day. I don’t want to listen to happy music. But while I was on twitter I came across the name “Sarah June Parker” and when I see cool things I tend to go crazy with the googlin’. I found a page with quotes by her, and there’s one I like that’s pretty cheesy. It doesn’t live up to the image of this person I had in my head, but I like it anyway. “May I never miss a sunset or a rainbow because I am looking down.”

Diary of a Wimpy Kid on DVD this summer

diary of a wimpy kid

In the same way that mothers of teenage Mom’s were told to have their daughters watch Mean Girls, I think Mom’s (and Dad’s) or kids in middle school should know about this new DVD release for the movie Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It is based on a best-selling novel by Jeff Kinney, and that novel started off as online cartoons.

I was surprised I hadn’t heard of it yet, because the novel sold over 30 million copies and spent three years on The New York Times’ children’s best-seller list. Even though I’m personally not much for reading or finding too many children’s books, I think this is something worth talking about.

kayla ewell style

Designer Erica Davies has some great stuff that’s perfect for a casual-luxe summer. And if you know me, I happen to feel my ideal style is casual-luxe. It’s the kind of way where you look polished, but you’re ultra comfortable and don’t look overly prissy or fussy.

Gorgeous in green! Actress Kayla Ewell in an Erica Davies top.

Celebrate life everyday! Everyday is a holiday.

Today we’re celebrating designer Erica Davies, who will be featured next Monday on QVC. She is already beloved by actresses like Kayla Ewell (The Vampire Diaries), Elisabeth Rohm (Heroes, Law & Order, Angel) and Kristy Swanson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie). We’re also celebrating the particular style aesthetic embraced by Davies. She defines the inspiration for her look as, “a perfect blend of the stylish 1930s couple ... Read More

Lea Michele Beauty Secrets

Stylist recently had an interview with Lea Michele (Glee) and she gave some excellent beauty tips!

Naturally, as a spokesperson for Dove Hair, Michele mentioned that she loves Dove haircare. If you recall, Jessica gave a Dove Daily Moisture Therapy Review and also vouched that it’s amazing.

When it comes to products she loves Michele told Stylist, “I can’t leave home without my Laura Mercier concealer and I have this incredible Chanel lip balm that moisturizes my lips.” She mentioned she also uses tinted moisturizers because all you need is “good skin and a nice fresh face and then you look good.” She also mentioned she loves Kate Somerville products, Clarisonic products (specifically the Clarisonic Face Brush) and AMOREPACIFIC products.

Admitting that she loves the bohemian style that Nicole Richie has, Michele said, ” I want to wear a long dress every day. That’s all I want to do. I want to wear a long, flowy summer dress all day long with flats.” Maxi dresses are still in! I bet Michele loves House of Harlow stuff.

Have a Ball with Lea Michele as your Inspiration

lea michele my favorite thigns

I was so taken with the twirly-swirly-girly dresses that Lea Michele wore in her Dove Hair Campaign that I decided we should virtu-shop for some of them! As Michele sings “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music, she wears two different dresses, sparkly shoes, and a big smile. So I went on the hunt for things like dresses with tulle hems, and girly satin pumps with bows.

The books I remember from childhood

childhood memories

There are lots of things from childhood I’ll never forget…

Sandboxes. Every child should be able to play in one for great lengths of time, even if it means sandy clothing later. It lets you be so creative – making fake pies, building caverns, finding potential in everything… My Dad build mine, but my friend had one of those turtle sandboxes.

Dollhouses. No matter what kind of dollhouse I was presented with, I was eager to explore it. I made clothing for the dolls, and was fascinated by dollhouse furniture. No surprise I grew up loving fashion and interior design.

Ice Cream Trucks. It was the only appointment on the daily planner for me at that young age.

Slushie Machines. More specifically the Snoopy Sno-Cone machine.

Fireflies. Cliche as it seems, these seem magical when you are a child. Probably because I thought these were fairies.
