The Board Game That’s Inherently Nifty Because Kristen Bell Plays It

Did Kristen Bell make Bananagrams cool, or did Bananagrams make Kristen Bell cool? THAT IS THE QUESTION. Well, the first question I had was ‘what is banana grams?’ Like any modern girl, I went straight to YouTube for my answer. Turns out it’s a really simple word game that is kind of like boggle. I heard about this game because Kristen Bell told OK Magazine, “…I did just play an intense game of Bananagrams with my sisters…till the wee, small hours of the morning.”

Mastermind Toys said they love it because it’s portable and you can play it at your home or at “the cottage”. Well, we don’t all have summer cottages on lakes, but if you’ll be visiting any family members this summer at THEIRS, this might be a lifesaver. Banangrams could actually be the answer to every awkward question.

Question: “So, are you seeing anyone right now? What happened to that boyfriend with the mohawk?”

Real answer: You can already hear the disdain in their voice, and the follow-up questions will be about marriage and freezing your eggs so you can give your mother grandchildren… and it doesn’t help that the boyfriend in question cheated on you with his (male) best friend and then they wrote a  song about you called “Stupid Girl with the Weird Freckles”.

Your revised answer: “Oh – hey, did you wanna play this really cool game I brought?” (Cue: Whip it out of your purse where you’ve had it concealed for just such an emergency. Too bad this emergency will undoubtedly occur within ten minutes of arriving.)

Bananagramas could be great for girls night in, cheap date nights, any family events, babysitting for friends…

GOSSIP GIRL Fashion for Less | ‘The Hurt Locket’ Episode

I got a press release with this GOSSIP GIRL image that I wanted to share with you guys. It’s actually a really great GOSSIP GIRL fashion guide (”The Hurt Locket”) for those who like to stay up on that. It’s fun to see what designers each piece are from, although…let’s be honest – if they listed the prices of these items we’d cringe! What we in the real world need are GOSSIP GIRL fashion for LESS. The component of mixing winter whites with upcoming Spring make for an interesting outfit. A sweater dress in a white or cream is great when paired with a white bag with texture (like snakeskin or crocodile). They don’t say if Blake Lively was wearing any perfume for this scene, but I can practically smell the Donna Karan “Cashmere Mist” from here, so I’m also including that in the collage.

Amanda Seyfried’s Hair in ‘Chloe’ is Wavy and (Duh) Gorgeous!

Amanda Seyfried has a new movie with Julianne Moore and Liam Neeson called “Chloe”. It’s a dark drama/thriller and also supposedly pretty provocative. While I don’t know if it’s a movie worth seeing yet, I do know that Seyfried’s hair is really gorgeous in it! Yes, maybe I’m a little obsessed with hair. There was one year I put hot rollers in my hair pretty much EVERY  day, to have the “perfect” hair I wanted. People thought I was nuts to get up so early just to do my hair. But it gave me confidence, so I guess it was worth it.

Of course, the flaw in my plan was that I hate hairspray (so sticky, and if it lands on my face I feel so gross, gross, gross!) so  my curled hair would fall rather flat by noon most days. But seeing Seyfried’s curls in stills released for “Chloe” make me want to get out my hot rollers again (they’ve been gathering dust). Personally, I don’t think there’s a huge world of difference between hot rollers and curling irons. So to achieve Amanda Seyfried’s hair style, I think you’re okay using either. But you do need a little bit of hairspray on the curls, and control paste (I use Aveda’s) will help secure your part on a windy day.

Most pro’s insist on curling irons being superior (when I interviewed actress Felicia Day once she talked about how she brought curlers to Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the hair lady laughed at her!), but I find hot rollers so much easier to use (and you can do makeup while they work on your hair, as though you had an assistant!). As long as you use different sized curlers and let your curls fall a tiny bit before spraying them, I think your hair will look the same no matter what method you use to do it.Use these photos for guidance.

How to get Amanda Seyfried’s Hair:

  1. Part your hair with a deep side part.
  2. Use different sized heated rollers in your hair (Jumbo hot rollers are great if you have lots of hair or want only large curls), rolling the hair up 1/3 of the way up. You don’t want the curls to start at the top of your head.
  3. When the heaters are cooled, let your hair out. Don’t spray anything yet! Shake it. Run your fingers through it a bit and arrange it how you’d like it.
  4. When hair has reached the look you’d like, cover face with your free hand as much as possible while spraying the curls. Also spray your part.
  5. If you’d like, heat a bit of Aveda’s Control Paste in-between your fingers and run it over the curls and your part for even more security of your hairs’ hold.
  6. Don’t worry about your hair the rest of the day, relax and enjoy!

Dress like Jem in a Modern Way (Truly Outrageous?!)

If you’re a child of the 80’s, then you MUST know who Jem is! (Basically the Hannah Montana of her time, only in cartoon form.) I had a Jem doll and that doll was amazing – especially since her earrings LIT UP. I remember being really excited about that, mock not! Anyway. In a continuation of a them of using cartoons as fashion inspiration, I thought of Jem. While she actually wore a LOT of different outfits on the show (there is an entire website dedicated to the cartoon wardrobe for Jem) her iconic outfit was the pink dress, fringed belt and  pink shoe ensemble. Purple eyeshadow and star-shaped earrings helped make it extra fabulous. So, how do we take Jem, a childhood idol, and put it into a modern interpretation for today? Because, I’m sure you could find exact replicas of her outfit somewhere for Halloween, but this isn’t about Halloween costumes. This is about clothing that represents Jem. Which mean it’s gotta be about fun. The most kick ass fun stuff EVAR.

Jem’s Fashion Do’s:

Never shy away from polka-dots. They aren’t scary.
Purples, pinks and aqua blues are your go-to colors.
Fishnets!
Colored belts of every kind.
Trenchcoats & berets make you seem somber.
Boots are made for dancing.
Show off your legs in mini-skirts or tight leggings.
Always pose like you’re getting your picture taken.
Emphasize your waist with those belts. Stay loyal to your iconic jewelry (see: Star Earrings)
Feathers are fabulous.
Coordinate your accessories mono-chromatically.
Fringe was invented to be worn often.
Every occasion merits a fabulous outfit.

Steal this British Beauty’s DOCTOR WHO style: Cowgirl Boots

Digging the boots on Doctor Who’s new companion as featured in the new DW promo poster? Me too. Even as winter fades (and I silently cheer), we don’t have to give up all of our boots. After all, you can’t just kill a boot fetish like *snap* that!  Cowgirl boots are fun for Spring. Pair them with a jean skirt, or a pretty embroidered sun dress. You can pull them out again in the Fall. And because they aren’t strictly a one season trend, I think they’re a great investment. Which means you MIGHT want to invest in a pair that’s expensive enough that you know it’ll last. But if the boots seem like more of a whim, go for the least expensive ones.

The new Doctor Who companion is Karen Gillan, and her name on the show is Amy Pond. Technically I’ve seen her on the show before, as she was in the episode “The Fires of Pompeii” (an AMAZING episode) as “Soothsayer” but she wasn’t a crucial character, and I’m not even sure if we saw her face. Anyway, she’s back as a NEW character. It’s difficult for me to look at her hair and not want to dye mine red like hers. Why can’t I be a ginger, too???

What Would Damon Give Elena for Valentine’s Day?

Are you a fan of The Vampire Diaries? I have been from the start, and while many people love the relationship between Elena and Stefan, I’ve always preferred Elena/Damon. As episodes go by, we see more and more reasons to like them together. Which is exciting, because you gotta know it’s gonna happen SOMETIME. Anyway, I came across a gorgeous video on YouTube by KillerPandaJr, set to the Florence and the Machine song “Cosmic Love” (video below). This got me to thinking of what Damon might give to Elena for Valentine’s Day. Which got me shopping. And that’s always fun for me.

The restrictions I set for myself:

- Nothing too cheesy.
- No necklaces, since Elena already has one she always wears.
- I have to see a way for the writer’s to make it happen that Damon would give this to Elena, even as their relationship is now.
- Steer clear of things he would only give anonymously.

So, I hope you like how I did! Let me know – but be gentle! I included some things that have an antique feel so that Damon could put them in a box and perhaps say they were Katherine’s and she should have them since she’s Elena’s great-great-great-great-great grandmother. The sleep mask is something I can see him passive aggressively giving her with a comment about how if she’s going to hang out with Stefan all night she’ll have to sleep in the day. And the earrings are pretty, and since they have arrows I can picture him mocking her and saying she can wear them for protection (although they are totally safe and you couldn’t really harm anyone with them).
