Spotlight on Julie Hewett Makeup for RED Lips

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

bijou_collection

I took to the task of looking at all of the products on the Julie Hewett website because I’d bookmarked it a while ago. I’ve seen Julie’s products mentioned by celebs and other bloggers – so I know it’s got some merit. When I discover a new makeup line (especially if it’s got cute packaging – and this line DOES) my first impulse is that I want to buy one of each product. Of course, reality comes crashing in and I realize that’s just not something I can do unless I want to to debtors prison. Which may not even be a thing they have anymore, but in older books they always make it sound scary! Still, treating yourself to ONE new item that’s expensive is okay once in a while. And there’s nothing wrong with LOOKING.

What’s unique to Hewett’s line is this cameilla oil stuff, but also – Hewett is renoun for her use of RED lip products. So if you want to go for Julie Hewett, my suggestion is to try one of her lip products with a red hue. (After all, you don’t go to an Italian restaurant and then order an oriental salad. You go for what they’re known for doing well!)

camilla balm

Julie Hewett Organic Camellia Balm:

I like the sound of sheer rose or sheer ruby. (Sheer reds are not as scary to wear as you’d think.) What’s interesting to me is if the camellia oil actually does anything.

julie hewett sootJulie Hewett Eye Pencils:

The “Soot” option is sold out, and part of me thinks it would be fun to try these. I kind of chuckle at the “Rose Scented Mascara” though!

mandy palette

Julie Hewett Palette in Mandy:

*as seen in IN STYLE and LUCKY MAGAZINE

a perfect primping palette with four superb shades to get your glow on. a beauty tribute to the divine miss mandy moore.
peachie & natural cheekies – peachie, a fresh creamy coral & natural, a sheer tawny brown. wear alone or mix both colors to customize.
shimmy in goldie – a cream puff starlight shine for that ‘red carpet glow.’
lip lush in mimi – a sheer pink shimmer. your final touch for a flawless face! wear alone or over cheekie colors on lips.

Amanda Seyfried’s Hair in ‘Chloe’ is Wavy and (Duh) Gorgeous!

amanda seyfried hair 2

Amanda Seyfried has a new movie with Julianne Moore and Liam Neeson called “Chloe”. It’s a dark drama/thriller and also supposedly pretty provocative. While I don’t know if it’s a movie worth seeing yet, I do know that Seyfried’s hair is really gorgeous in it! Yes, maybe I’m a little obsessed with hair. There was one year I put hot rollers in my hair pretty much EVERY  day, to have the “perfect” hair I wanted. People thought I was nuts to get up so early just to do my hair. But it gave me confidence, so I guess it was worth it.

Of course, the flaw in my plan was that I hate hairspray (so sticky, and if it lands on my face I feel so gross, gross, gross!) so  my curled hair would fall rather flat by noon most days. But seeing Seyfried’s curls in stills released for “Chloe” make me want to get out my hot rollers again (they’ve been gathering dust). Personally, I don’t think there’s a huge world of difference between hot rollers and curling irons. So to achieve Amanda Seyfried’s hair style, I think you’re okay using either. But you do need a little bit of hairspray on the curls, and control paste (I use Aveda’s) will help secure your part on a windy day.

Most pro’s insist on curling irons being superior (when I interviewed actress Felicia Day once she talked about how she brought curlers to Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the hair lady laughed at her!), but I find hot rollers so much easier to use (and you can do makeup while they work on your hair, as though you had an assistant!). As long as you use different sized curlers and let your curls fall a tiny bit before spraying them, I think your hair will look the same no matter what method you use to do it.Use these photos for guidance.

How to get Amanda Seyfried’s Hair:

  1. Part your hair with a deep side part.
  2. Use different sized heated rollers in your hair (Jumbo hot rollers are great if you have lots of hair or want only large curls), rolling the hair up 1/3 of the way up. You don’t want the curls to start at the top of your head.
  3. When the heaters are cooled, let your hair out. Don’t spray anything yet! Shake it. Run your fingers through it a bit and arrange it how you’d like it.
  4. When hair has reached the look you’d like, cover face with your free hand as much as possible while spraying the curls. Also spray your part.
  5. If you’d like, heat a bit of Aveda’s Control Paste in-between your fingers and run it over the curls and your part for even more security of your hairs’ hold.
  6. Don’t worry about your hair the rest of the day, relax and enjoy!

Get Runway Ready Hair with Inside Tips from the AVON/MACKAGE NYFW Show

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

tippi avon hairAvon’s Global Stylist Advisor Tippi Shorter created the hair looks for the AVON/Mackage fall 2010 runway show at New York Fashion Week. (That’s a mouthful!) Tippi explains the hair for fans, “This look was really inspired by the woman who had her hair perfectly done the night before, wakes up and tries to recreate the look. It’s a look that I refer to as ’second day chic.’ It’s a sexy and mysterious look that works perfectly with the designs.”

I think the idea of a severe side part and using some bobby pins to make some of your hair drape in a curve like long bangs is a great idea and new way to change up your hair.

Tippi Shorter has created dashing ‘dos for stars like Alicia Keys, Beyonce and Mary J. Blige. So, she KNOWS what she’s doing. These are the products she used:

AVON Advance Techniques Volumizing Mousse ($4): This lightweight mousse adds volume without feeling sticky or greasy!

AVON Advance Techniques Moisture Sleek Smoothing Serum ($5):Simply apply a dime size amount of product, rub on the hands and distribute evenly through the hair.

Avon Advance Techniques Shaping Gel ($4): This gel offers long-lasting hold without appearing crunchy or sticky. It keep hair soft and keeps your hair looking its best!

AVON Advance Techniques Mirror Shine Spray ($4): This ultra-light shine spray leaves hair softer, smoother and silkier. It works to condition and revitalize any style.

I SO Want: Wireless Speakers for the Bathroom

Saturday, February 13th, 2010
fda

I have friends who literally take their laptops into the bathroom as they prepare to, and then shower. Now, I don’t mean to be a Debbie Downer but I think that is a rat-tastic horrible idea. Won’t the steam from the shower affect your laptop? When it breaks, aren’t you liable to have some sort of meltdown because you forgot to back somesuch thing up on a flashdrive? I don’t think you should put your most precious of objects in such peril.

So, I think that they should invest in something I’m looking for – wireless speakers for the bathroom. I’d say “wireless speakers for the shower” but I don’t mean for them to be actually “in” the shower. But they’re for the shower, or prepping makeup in the bathroom – that sort of thing. And if for some reason the speakers do get ruined, at least you haven’t lost all of those short stories you’ve been writing on your laptop. (And yea, I know you’ve been writing some!)

Speaker, Wireless Portable Speaker by Veho Uk : This seems really easy to work. You plug a USB thingy into your computer and then bring the actual speaker into whatever room you’d like. You can listen to your mp3’s or even Internet radio while you shave your legs. That sounds pretty nice.

And it’s great if you think life is a musical, which most of us creative souls do. Kind of like that scene with Tom in 500 Days of Summer where he imagines what happens the day after he’s with Summer and there’s that sequence with the Hall & Oates song “You Make My Dreams Come True”.

What I Find Surprising AND Reassuring

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

cat with socks

Two dissimilar words came to my mind the other day. They were, “Reassuring and surprising.” They promptly moved into my brain as I was laying on my bedroom floor to do some stretching. I do stretching on the floor for my back, since sitting at a desk all day can make you as achey as I imagine Heidi Klum’s permanently stilettoed feet must feel. (And even heels when preggers? Really now!)

After I’d been laying on the floor like an idiot, feeling unfairly lulled into a pre-dinner nap, I moved my head just enough to catch a glimpse of my cat lying on the floor near me. She’d been out of my eyesight before, and since shopcat’s ninja-quiet, I hadn’t heard her at all. Knowing that she was there made me geek out a bit, and that’s when I decided my feeling of this was that I was surprised but also reassured. It’s not totally unexpected to see Shopcat lurking somewhere I don’t expect her to be. And the sight of her is always welcome (well…not while I’m in the shower – and yes, that has happened). The idea that she would curl up to me, especially when I’m feeling a little low, reassures me that she feels affection towards me. And yes, I’m weird and I crave approval and affection from my cat! I’ve noticed that she follows me around wherever I go very trickly. (I’ll look up and notice that she’s on a chair nearby me while I’m watching Netflix goodies, or that she’s appeared on my bed while I’m organizing my socks.)

So, that warm feeling of seeing Shopcat there with me was surprising and then instantly reassuring. And I really like those two words paired together. Since I’m always thinking about what to write here, I wondered if there was any way to group items as being both surprising and reassuring. As you maaay have realized, I obviously did. Since I’m about to tell you!

I’ve made a list of items that I find bring out that feeling of being surprised then reassured.

1. Gilmore Girls. Gilmore Girls episodes that I’ve already seen surprise and reassure me by how easily re-watchable this show is. I think that quality is due to how witty and fast-paced it is. I only own one season (the 7th – the worst season!) but you can watch them on THEWB.COM for free! Yay, free stuff.

2. Soft Socks. I recently bought two pairs of Aloe Socks by Earth Therapeutics. I got mine at Kohl’s for $8.00 each. You can also get them online @ Amazon. These socks are so soft that if you forget you’re wearing them and take a moment to focus on your feet – it’s amazing to realize how comfortable you truly are.I want to note that I didn’t really take much note of the aloe factor for the socks, but I did find they were terrific to put on after I lotioned up my feet. So really, any super soft chenille sort of sock could work.

3. Apple Chips. So delicious, but low in calorie. Mmm. If you get in the habit of eating them, you start to think you’re cheating on your diet. But you’re not. Genius! I like the regular ones, or cinnamon ones.

4. New Pillows. When you get new pillows, every night you’re surprised at first by them since you’ve been out of bed all day. And then you become happy with your decision to purchase them. I’ve been experiencing this ever since I bought two new Calvin Klein pillows on sale at Marshall’s. They are SO fluffy! Softer pillows are great for people who sleep on their stomach/side – which is what I do. They were a great investment, and I got two for the price of what just one was at another store. (I secretly think that the Leachco Snoogle Body Pillow looks awesome, haha. And it has amazing reviews! But apparently these are for pregnant moms, blah blah. They get all the fun. Har. …And omg, the Snoogle Loop looks even more cool. You could use that in bed to watch TV. Ungh. Wants. I want it just so I can say “Just let me go get my Snoogle.” :D )

6. Lippy that lasts. Whether you want a lipstick that lasts, lipgloss that lasts (good luck) etc – it’s great to find a product that really works for you. It’s such a surprise to look in the mirror two hours after you’ve left home, only to see that your lip product is still there and working. One product that I’ve found that works for me is the Cover Girl Outlast Lipstain. But you still should do some layering to make the color last. When I wear it, I always put some sort of sheer lipstick over it. Lipliner is another great thing to help color stick and stay – no matter the product. The color I have for the Lipstain is the #400 “Everbloom Kiss”. It’s my favorite of all of them. I’ve also tried #410 “Bit of Blossom” (nice, a medium raspberry) and #445 “Cinnamon Smile” (a little too dark/muddy for a fair complexion).

Tiny Toons Spring into Fashion

babs bunny

My twitter friend Ilana, who obsesses over TV as much as I do, was talking about Tiny Toons recently. SURELY you must remember Tiny Toons as an after-school staple, do you not? Well, I guess it depends on your age…blah, blah. Well, she posted a link to a video that got me inspired to think the very rational question, how would you dress Babs the bunny today, in actual clothing? It’s more sensible than you think – it’s almost Spring (well, let me believe it is!) so the colors of yellow and purple are spot-on for the season.

As always, every item I pick will be below the $100.00 mark, but I also have an untested theory that if you dress similar to a cartoon or object of lust of a boy, they may actually subconsciously start liking you for the similarities you present in your appearance. Of course, anyone who wears a slutty red dress like Jessica Rabbit really just has their cleavage to thank, not her. (And now I have an idea for yet another post! Chickaboom!)

The formula is (oh yes there IS a formula!): A purple bottom and yellow top, or a base dress in either color, with accents of the other. Something purple in the hair works well, but you can also opt for purple earrings. Babs never wore much makeup, but if she had – she would have focused on clear lip gloss, lots of black mascara on the top lashes, and peachy/pink blush. Am I a total freak for being able to pick up on that? Nah. I’m just keen! Her personality strikes me as walking the line between sport/flirty. If you want to be really hardcore about this, you could get purple contacts. A pair of bunny ears, and you’ve got a cool twist on a Halloween costume with elements you could actually wear again. Minus the ears. Except in the bedroom. I mean, wha? ;)

Which Pic Makes You Wanna Buy Demi Moore’s Perfume?

demi moore perfume

So, this ad came out with Demi Moore for the perfume “Wanted”. And I guess there’s a before picture that was tweeted by Ashton Kutcher and people are quick to compare. I think there’s a problem with trying to compare these photos since the poses are different, and the ad of course uses photoshop effects, not to mention that we do expect a bit of photoshopping. The effect for the ad was to be radiant, etc. I understand that. But at what point do they start making a person look unreal? Is Moore even very recognizable in the first picture? They pay big bucks to get her, and then they alter everything about her! The only difference I see? A Kabballah bracelet was removed for the ad.

NY Mag noted these differences (also where the picture is from)

• Her cleavage appears sculpted and inflated.
• Her armpit is missing a prominent wrinkle.
• Her sternum has disappeared.
• Her hair is smoother and more voluminous.
• Her neck has no wrinkles.
• Actually, none of her has wrinkles.

Bottom line: While Moore may appeal more ’sexy’ in the ad, she looks happier in the untouched photo.

Stay smart: What you see isn’t usually as it IS.

Shea Terra Organics Review & Giveaway!

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

Your skin can feel like a baby again. Picture: paulandaline on Flickr.

Your skin can feel like a baby again, without resorting to those Heidi Pratt tactics of plastic surgery and other weird stuff! Picture: paulandaline on Flickr.

I am typing this after soaking in a bath, and luxuriously pampering myself with Shea Terra Organics products as though I were in a spa. I have a fluffy robe, and ambient music – I can fake the spa feeling! Especially when I have such amazing products at my hands. (Hands which are already feeling softer – but more on that later!)

We’ve mentioned the Shea Terra Organics line before, because it’s a brand we’ve used and absolutely trust and believe in. Also, almost more than makeup, at ShesSmart.com we care about healing and nourishing our skin (we would like to avoid all botox injections). We want to treat our skin from H-T (head to toe) as Tyra Banks would say when she tells her models to go about modeling. The best way to go about treating your skin is with natural products, or eco-friendly products as they say. Whatever you want to call it, if it feels good and works, and you can tell that it’s been brought to you through safe means and with safe ingredients – then all is well.

And all is GREAT with Shea Terra Organics. Seriously. Yes, I can namedrop and say that famous people like Angelina Jolie are vocal fans of this line. But better than that I can provide you with my personal experiences with the products. I talked with the company and told them that in the winter we really want to focus on dealing with dry skin patches, and just really making sure we are moisturized properly. So, I was then generously sent a kit of products to test that would help with that and other skin issues.

Before I get into the run-down review, I want to mention that the company was born out of the passion of a very wonderful woman, Tammie Umbel (the CEO and founder). What she’s done is find a way to provide jobs and income for people in Africa while helping people in the West get the very best in high-quality products (which are made from sustainable, 99% natural ingredients only). While the products help empower you to face the day with clearer skin, the sales of the products empower people in Africa to have better lives.

melon body spray

Shea Terra Organics Tsamma Melon “Light & Healing” Body Nectar: As with all products from this line, this is naturally fragranced. And man, why do they bother creating so many perfumes when something that’s already here smells so amazing? This body oil absorbs quickly (especially if you apply after a shower) and softens skin while leaving the linger of a delicious melon scent. It smells almost like a sweet cantaloupe, but better. Rather than letting the spray go wide in many directions, it is a concentrated amount that gets sprayed out. I find this actually makes it easier to apply to myself. You can spray it over areas and then rub it in with your hand, or spray some into your palm and then apply it like that.  There are four different Body Nectar Oil Sprays available, all that target a different issue from being anti-aging to toning. $22 (Body Spray)

black soap review

Mint Marrakesh Indigenous Black Soap Elixir:  I am in love, sweet heavenly LOVE with the scent of this body wash. The scent wakes you right up. The black soaps from this line are famous for being amazing on your skin. Not only does it leave it totally cleansed, exfoliated and soft, but it helps heal acne, lessen sun damage and eczema. I’ve used Proactive before and this is definitely better for your skin. Proactive would dry my skin out and the chemicals smelled bad  – not to mention that the lotion has bleaching ingredients which sometimes transferred to T-shirts or pillowcases (and they expect you to be fine with putting that on your face!). $18 (Black Soap products)

African Lemongrass Indigenous Black Soap Elixir: I don’t love the smell of lemongrass, but it’s still a rather pleasing scent and it perks up your senses in the way that citrus scents do. The effects of the black soap are just as great as in the Mint Marrakesh. $18  (Black soap products)

shea butter

Shea Nilotica: If you are looking for a product to drastically soften skin, and fade scars or stretch marks – this is it. When we first adopted shopcat I would hold her more often than she liked and I would receive the scars to prove it – right on my face or upper chest! Yikes. But Shea Nilotica came to my rescue and I saw results in a week.  $16 (Best healing lotion)

pomegrante body lotion

Shea Body Butters:  Rich and moisturizing just as you’d expect, what you might not realize is that the scents are totally unreplicated anywhere but in nature. And even then, unless you actually live in Africa you probably haven’t smelled them all. My favorite is the Pink Guava Pomegranate which is just sweet and light and beautiful. I also love the Lavender of the Khosian because, if you remember, the scent of lavender calms my migraines. Check out the Bourbon Vanilla and Miombo Mango, too.  $18 (Natural Body Butters)

Fair Trade Gourmet Divine Dark Chocolate: Why not treat your mouth a bit when you treat your skin? It’s totally allowed. Dark chocolate is a natural antidepressant, and loaded with anti-oxidants that fight cancer. “Shea Terra Organics promotes Divine Chocolate for its efforts to improve the condition of cacao growers in Africa. Not only are cooperative farmers paid more than others, but they also own more than 50% of Divine shares.” So, help people, get chocolate – and what’s more? This chocolate tastes heavenly. I especially recommend the Dark Chocolate Mint variety. (Organic Chocolate Bars)

The January issue of InStyle has dark red lips for you, as modeled by the female cast members of The Vampire Diaries. Of course, there’s one person in the mix who is long since gone from the show!

For Medium Skin: Estee Lauder All Day Lipstick in Cinnamon Stick (Not as dark as the ones they choose for Kayla Ewell, but very wearable and easily layered. I own this. It is especially great when layered with Clinique Liquid Lipstick in Raspbery Sorbet. I also own that, and am currently wearing both.)
For Olive Skin: Burt’s Bees Super Shiny Lip gloss in Zetsy Red. (You can’t go wrong with Burt’s Bees. You just can’t.) Lola Cosmetics Lip Indulgence Full Coverage Lip Gloss.

Things I Bought That I Love

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

I bought some things recently that I LOVE, so I wanted to share some info about them with you guys. After all, a store clerk will easily lie to you, but someone who spent their own hard-earned money to buy something will be straight-up honest with you about a product. No doubt! Yo. Uh, do I sound gangsta now? Moving on…

best fudge

I bought: Fudge!
For: My dear Dad.
From: KandyKettleKitchen on Etsy.
Specifically what I got: Creamy Fudge, Four Flavor Box – 1 lb in Chocolate and Peanut Butter Layer, Chocolate, Raspberry & Cream,  and Heath English Toffee (Check other fudge flavors here.)
Price: $10.79 + S&H
Thoughts: I knew I wanted to get my Dad fudge for Christmas. Not only am I not a fan of eating fudge, I’m a pretty laughable baker. So I decided handmade fudge would be perfect. The hardest decision was trying to decide which of the many flavors to get. I tried to secretly quiz my Dad about what his preferences for candy were… and I think he started to get onto my plan a bit. Oops! The fudge arrived in a very gift-worthy package and everything was super fresh. I was even tempted to try the Peanut Butter and Chocolate layer fudge (against my will, I swear!) and it was actually…amazingly delicious. So now we have a problem in that I like fudge now! The shop owner was so friendly with me, because I had asked her a few questions before purchasing the fudge. I feel like this was a very A+ purchase of mine!
Shop: Delicious fudge.
Would I repurchase?: Yes.

essential oils

I bought: Essential oil scents.
For: My myself, I deserve it!
From: ForStrangeWomen on Etsy.
Specifically what I got: Mini Vials – Mix and Match Set – Natural Perfume and Meditation Oils (Two boxes of three each.) The scents I selected were Cleopatra x2, Astral Projection, Jaded, Sweet Androgyny, Moss and Ivy.
Price: $9.00 x 2 + S&H
Thoughts: These vegan scents are wonderful. I am very ‘into’ essential oils right now. I only like a few perfumes, because I always smell the chemicals and alcohol. With essential oils you get none of that nonsense. To quote ForStrangeWomen, “Natural perfumes are safer, more satisfying to the senses, and the plant extracts have natural healing properties (aromatherapy) that your mind and body will love. Combined with nourishing jojoba oil, glycerin, and natural vitamin E oil, you will feel your skin is noticeably softer and healthier where the oil is applied.” Honestly, I had no idea why I didn’t like perfumes very much, but now I feel a bit more educated. And I also understand that it’s good for my wallet because store perfumes are super freakin’ expensive! My favorite scent is Astral Projection which I put on my wrists before bed. My second favorite scent is Moss and Ivy. The impressive packaging contained dried rose petals – and as soon as I discovered them I just knew that this was  a shop that understood me. I’m strange, with zero plans on changing.
Shop: Great essential oils.
Would I repurchase?: Yes.

amazing perfumes

I bought: (More) Essential oil scents.
For: With the idea that I might pass these along to my sisters. Which I never did. Shhh. ;)
From: OpheliasApothecary on Etsy.
Specifically what I got: Perfume and Fragrance Sampler -  Try Fragrance before you Buy – 5 Smackers Saturday Night Sale! The scents I selected were Vanilla Noir, Relaxation Blend, Black Currant Vanilla, Asian Plum, Rosemary Mint, and Blackberry Sage Tea. And the new Pear Quince scent was included for free, as was a Pepperint Sugar Scoop Sugar Scrub, a coupon code, and a handwritten note on hand-stamped, shimmery stationery from the owner, Ophelia. Talk about going the extra mile for every customer!
Price: $5.00  + S&H
Thoughts: See that generous sale? You got six! I had to buy these! They came to me in a wonderful tin, and everything is labeled/packaged with this gorgeous stamp design that is both pretty and refined. Each of the vials were labeled as you can see in the picture. I love that care and attention to detail. “The essential and fragrance oils are mixed with rice bran oil and provide long lasting fragrancing so that you can wear your fragrances and see how they do with your chemistry over the course of the day!” I’m currently wearing the Pear Quince scent and it’s stayed fresh for an hour. And I don’t just mean that it’s stayed, I mean that it’s stayed and my nose hasn’t become immune, I can still smell myself! (So often scents fade to your nose because you get used to them.) I feel like all of the scents I got were traditional but with a special twist. They fragrances were appealing in that they were slightly familiar, but brought to a new level of sought after divinity. Lean in, I have to tell you a secret… I absolutely love every one of the marvelous scents I bought. The idea in trying samplers is that you want to get an idea of what you’ll like, and you assume there will be some that don’t work for you. best ergonomic keyboard

I bought: An ergonomic keyboard – about a year ago.
For: Myself, because I write a lot (duuh) and I have carpel tunnel.
From: Office Max.
Specifically what I got: Microsoft Natural Ergo Keyboard 400
Price: Around $60.00
Thoughts: Best.Purchase.Ever. I love this thing. I debated and researched lots of different ergonomic keyboard options. But for me, I went with top of the line (within reason). I can’t imagine typing being any more comfortable. I am in love with my keyboard. It really saved my wrist/hand from more pain. My wrists are always comfortable and the keyboard really is easier to type on than the standard ’straight ahead’ keyboards. It took me about a day to get used to typing on this, but now it’s easy peasy. I am going to kiss my keyboard right now. SMOOCH.
Shop: Best Ergonomic Keyboard / Best Ergonnomic Keyboard+ Ergonomic Mouse for price of what I paid for just the keyboard!
Would I repurchase?: If it ever broke? Hell yes.
