The Hair Accessories to Buy Now and Wear for Halloween

mermaid halloweenEtoiles De Mer in gold

Etsy shop makers are creating the most wonderful hair accessories for women. Some are a bit eccentric for everyday wear, but some walk the line. I would recommend buying something now that you can also wear for Halloween. There’s a giant star if you’d like to wear it to a late night party as well as being a mermaid at some point. There’s a flower fascinator to wear everyday or be a fairy later on. And there’s even a giant red bow a la Minnie Mouse or Snow White. You don’t need to invest in something tacky at the last minute in October, buy something you’ll wear much more often than just once a year.

The Fun Wallet Choice That Will Make Life Easier

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

kisslock wallet My wallet of choice is the kind called a kisslock wallet. It’s reminiscent of the little coin purses I had as a little girl (when I had roughly the same amount of moola as I do now – kiiiding). But my reasons for wanting this kind of wallet aren’t strictly about sentimentality – it’s about practicality.

SKIP SENSIBLE PRINTS For years I’ve had different zippered wallets, always in a sensible (read: black) color. But I began to loathe zippered wallets, and I realized that a kisslock wallet opens and closes so much easier.

SAVE TIME You know those pieces they’ll put in magazine sometimes, telling you how many days of your life you’ll spend shaving your legs cumulatively if you live until 80? (It makes me want to go on strike!) Well, I don’t know how long they’d say we’d spend dealing with problematic wallets, but this has to be cutting down the time.

button wallet

DOUBLE DUTY Something nice about some kisslock wallets are that they double as a clutch. It can be a relief to only have to carry something small, and have everything in it without taking much effort to transfer the essential cards and spare tissue into another clutch. If you plan to use your wallet to double as a clutch, that is the only time I think you should spend very much on your wallet. I mean, okay – you need to spend enough on one that it won’t fall apart because if it falls apart…you’re screwed. But there’s not a ton of reason to spend perfectly good shoe money on your wallet. People won’t see it as much as you think (unless you’re becoming a shopaholic).

The Necklace Trend We Can’t Get Enough Of

lee angel sale

Ribbon and crystal necklaces are super trendy right now, but even without the trend factor – I love them. But can we find them not just for under $100, but under $75 a la the Lee Angel designer necklace? Yes, yes we can! Especially with help from Etsy.com.

Five Ruffle Shoes Under 100 Dollars

ruffly sandalsNot only are ruffled sandals popular these days, but they help create a longer leg line from the front. It adds a great bit of pop to an otherwise dull outfit (black pants with ruffled red sandals are va-va-voomy!) and….they’re just so pretty and happy and nice! Gwen Stefani’s line L.A.M.B. has some ruffled sandals out right now but they’re like $200, which is too rich for my iron-poor blood. If you aren’t happy with these selections, ask a salesperson about Steve Madden – that brand is doing lots of ruffles right now. I used to think Steve Madden was only for teens, but I think they’re somehow matured when I wasn’t looking.

Lee Angel Jewelry for LESS is an Occasion to Shop

ombre jewelry

Carrie Mulligan (the actress in the beautiful movie An Education) wears a pair of small Lee Angel earrings in Vanity Fair. Since I couldn’t see the earrings in the picture, I did an easy google search to see what Lee Angel jewelry looked like. I found there were some very cool ombre pieces by the designer – too cool to just ignore. Now, I can tell you that ombre is when a color fades from one to the next, although asking me for how to pronounce it probably won’t get you far. But I can ALSO tell you that ombre jewelry looks uber stylish.

I think we can find ombre jewelry for less than that! After all, we thrive on fashion under 100. Are we up to the task? I believe so. Here’s what I found:

Fake It! Tattoo Tights Will Make You Look Fierce

tattoo sockssexy BUTTERFLY TATTOO thigh-high socks DEEP MOCHA

I have never wanted a tattoo on myself for reals. But fake tattoos aka temporary tattoos have always caught my eye. It’s as though any day can be Halloween and you can be someone else, in some small way. With tattoo’s you can actually take fashion to an entirely new level. You may have heard that Chanel has temporary face tattoo’s now – but they’re expensive and…for your face? Weird. But what about leg tattoo’s? They go under the name “tattoo tights” or “tattoo socks”.

They’re so much less painful and costly than the real thing. And since I hate pain, this is the way to go. So tattoo tights or fake tattoos are what I’d pick.

Steal this British Beauty’s DOCTOR WHO style: Cowgirl Boots

doctor who promo

Digging the boots on Doctor Who’s new companion as featured in the new DW promo poster? Me too. Even as winter fades (and I silently cheer), we don’t have to give up all of our boots. After all, you can’t just kill a boot fetish like *snap* that!  Cowgirl boots are fun for Spring. Pair them with a jean skirt, or a pretty embroidered sun dress. You can pull them out again in the Fall. And because they aren’t strictly a one season trend, I think they’re a great investment. Which means you MIGHT want to invest in a pair that’s expensive enough that you know it’ll last. But if the boots seem like more of a whim, go for the least expensive ones.

The new Doctor Who companion is Karen Gillan, and her name on the show is Amy Pond. Technically I’ve seen her on the show before, as she was in the episode “The Fires of Pompeii” (an AMAZING episode) as “Soothsayer” but she wasn’t a crucial character, and I’m not even sure if we saw her face. Anyway, she’s back as a NEW character. It’s difficult for me to look at her hair and not want to dye mine red like hers. Why can’t I be a ginger, too???

Learn About Life from Anna-Karin, the Swedish Jewelry Designer Who Lives Where Pirates Roamed

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

What you’re about to embark on is a read of an interview I did with Anna-Karin, a Swedish jewelry maker. You shooould recall that I recently reviewed a few pieces of her jewelry. And I BET you recall that there will be a very generous gift card giveaway for her shop! But that’s coming up a little bit later. For now I want you to focus on what she had to say, because this cheerful artist is as entertaining as she is talented.I would like to move to Sweden and have her mentor me in jewelry-making and the general business of “life”.

Silver Fern - lightweight sterling silver earrings

Silver Fern - lightweight sterling silver earrings

What is the significance behind your Etsy shop name “Black Daisy Designs“? Can you provide us with some insight into why you selected that particular moniker?

Aaahhh…. yes….see, now I would love to be able to say that “Yes, there is quite a story behind the name Black Daisy Designs”. I would love to be able to say that many, many years ago when I was young and traveling around the world, exploring the possibilities of my future I found a book while sauntering through a French market, with this mysterious black daisy on the front…

But I can’t. I just thought of the name one dreary Tuesday morning in March 2009, driving to work. I liked it, so I used it. *Cough* But I DO remember the exact spot where I thought of it. :D

You live in Karlskrona, Sweden. That’s pretty exotic to me! What are some characteristics about your town that can help paint a picture of that place for us?

Karlskrona (meaning Karl’s Crown in honour of the king) was founded in 1680 by King Karl XI, on the island of Trossö. In 1680 Sweden was the dominant military power in the Baltic Sea region. The island had a very strategic position with short sailing distances to the German and Baltic provinces and being located in the south, the harbour was ice free all winter. (Well… I guess THIS winter proved King Karl XI wrong.)

The island Trossö was owned by a farmer called Vittus Andersson and when he was first approached by the King and asked about selling the island, he was not interested in complying. But King Karl XI wasn’t a King to be stopped by a farmer and Mr Andersson was soon forced to sell the island to the King anyway. Mr Andersson got the last word though and cursed the city as he was forced off the island.

“The city of Karl shall burn, be pestered by diseases and sink into the ocean”.

It has burnt, but has been rebuilt. Oh, and the rumour has it that Vittus Andersson wasn’t a farmer at all…. but a pirate. Arrr….

Today Karlskrona is the last remaining naval base for the Swedish Royal Navy and the naval installations in Karlskrona has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Me and my husband (who, by the way is an officer in the Swedish Royal Navy) our daughter, two cats, two birds and uncountable dust bunnies live just outside Karlskrona in a quiet little village called Nättraby. Our house is a big 1960’s-built home with a view over the little creek where the steam boat into Karlskrona runs. We often take the boat into town when we don’t have anything special to do. It’s quiet, it’s rural… and that is fortunate… because then I can bang away at my work desk without having to worry about neighbours being disturbed.

Riveted stacking ring with Rock Crystal

Riveted stacking ring with Rock Crystal

You were making jewelry for several years before you picked up the art of silversmithing. Is that a dangerous task – do you ever get burned? (Yipes!) How long does it typically take to create a silversmithed piece of jewelry?

Do I ever get burned?? HA! Do I ever! I’m going to give you a little tip – when you’ve heated a piece of silver with a torch do not, and I repeat this because it’s important, do NOT pick up the piece with your fingers before you’ve quenched it. Really – don’t do it. You’ll get burned. How I know? Ooh… umm… I’ve heard about people doing it. *Cough*

The time question is really, really hard. It can literally take anything from 15 min to several hours. Not including the “thinking time”. I often go round and think of a design for quite some time before I start with it. And, often will I make a few sketches – nothing fancy – but just a little something to give myself a “visual idea” of what the finished piece will look like.

Drip Drops, sterling silver earrings

Drip Drops, sterling silver earrings

As a mother with a little daughter, have you ever designed something unique just for her? What does she think of your art?

Yes, I have. But my 6yr old daughter is a Girly-Girl and I don’t think she thinks silver is pink/purple/sparkly enough. And besides, GOLD is the flavour of my little diva. But she’s very supportive – as is my husband – of my art, and she is very quick to compliment me for any new design I’m working on. Actually, she has her own work place where she makes her own jewellery and she is already proving amazing sales ability.

She makes me buy her hand made earrings for 10 Sek (= $1.30) a pair. And it’s not like a have an option not too. Oh noooo….

“Mommy, you’re going to buy these for 10 Sek.”
“Oh but hunny, I don’t have ANY cash on me at all right now, I only have my plastic card.”
“That’s all right, I take cards.”

True story.

Concave Dandelion earrings

Concave Dandelion earrings

If you had to pick only one favorite piece from your shop, what would it be?

It would be a piece that I couldn’t separate from so it never even got listed – the Caribbean Shores necklace. It’s quite simple in design but with a gorgeous big, blue Chrysocalla cabochon that makes me think of tropical waters every time I see it.

(Oh and I’m very partial to the Curled Hoops earrings. And the ring, Frozen. And the Linear earrings. And the… oh yes…. ONE favourite piece… )

Now that we know what you love most, what about other’s? What Black Daisy Design pieces are most popular?

Curled Hoops

Curled Hoops

I’m not sure which one it is exactly, but I think it’s a pretty even score between the Curled Hoops (small and XL), Linear earrings and the Copper Dandelion earrings.

I know you wear many of your own designs, do you have other favorite jewelry designers that you also wear, or Etsy shops you are a great admirer of?

Etsy is so jam packed with talent it’s impossible not to have other favourites, but as I’m trying to build a business I’ve made a decision only to wear my own pieces. (You know – should I get ambushed by someone in the grocery store just looooving the ring I’m wearing. Then I can say “I made it” and hand her my card.:)

But that doesn’t stop me from having favourites that I like to check in on from time to time. The problem with looking at other jewellery sellers too closely though, is that your Muse might pick up on their designs and when you least know it, you’re standing there with a piece that looks eerily like another seller’s piece. So, I actually try not to look too much on other jewellery sellers and I think my Muse agrees with me it’s a good idea. (My Muse is VERY strong headed and I think she likes to be …”unaffected” by others… hehehe.)

But there are still some stores I do love – because the jewellery is beautiful and the owner equally so.

There are – of course – so many more. But I can’t mention them all. The list is never-ending. (But you all know who you are. ;)

The Swedish Jewelry Required For Your Fanciful Life

curled hoops 2

black daisy designs

I am so impressed by this silversmith jewelry maker from Sweden, that I simply can’t stop gushing about her work.

It felt like Christmas when I received a package from Sweden with items to review from Black Daisy Designs. But let me be more specific, it felt like Christmastime when you get a gift from a rich, childless relative who goes overboard with the gifts. You know how those gifts always have a special flair, and they’re above and beyond anything your parents have done for you? That’s what this was like. silver earrings

First off, the packaging that Anna-Karin of Black Daisy Designs uses is unlike anything I’ve seen from any other store or Etsy shop. It made me even more excited to open the parcel’s. Color-coordinated right down to the green ribbons, the bundles are very inspired  and creative. It reminded me of how in grade school you’d get passed notes from friends, and the notes were folded in the most amazing ways. Trying to redo the folds was always nearly impossible, but I’d still try because I loved the way it looked. The packaging is exactly in the same vein. It’s like ‘Ah, I don’t want to open it – but I do!’

The Curled Hoops in Sterling Silver I received were the medium size and shiny. You can decide on the size and whether you want them oxidized or not. What is so surprising curled hoopsabout these is HOW light they are on your ears. I am very sensitive about my ears, and with these earrings I forget I’m even wearing them. And like I said, these are the medium one’s – you’d think I’d feel them, or some weight of them. But that’s the beauty of these earrings. They are weightless. The sterling silver is curled and handcrafted into the hoops by Anna-Karin herself so each is truly a unique piece of jewelry. Of them, Anna-Karin says, “They are THE perfect everyday earrings and one of my favorite earrings. I have a pair of each size and I wear one pair almost every day and get so many compliments for them.”

squiggly ring

I also received a Squiggly Ring to match! The reason I was intrigued by sterling silver ringthis ring is that large rings are great, but they can make your finger feel uncomfortable and sweaty. But the Squiggly Ring lets your finger “breathe”, you know? It looks perfect on any finger, but I especially like it on the pointer finger.

Made to order, you can select the size of the ring AND size of the squiggles. Yes indeedy, the squiggle size is up to you! (Bwahaha, I like saying that. )

Something great about this ring is that you can put it on in two different ways, and then turn it as you’d like for a different view of the ring.

These whimsical items of jewelry are the perfect accompaniment to any attire. They are crafted with a caring spirit and will always garner your style a second glance. Cheerful and unique, I know I’ll get a lot of wear out of these pieces.

Anna-Karin is so lovely and spirited that talking to her is an instant mood-lifter. And she has a great jewelry blog where she talks about everything from how she gets inspired for different items (like a topographic ring) to the comical take she has on her daughter’s birthday parties.
