Jenna Fisher looks fantastic on the cover of Shape Magazine.

Jenna Fisher looks fantastic on the cover of Shape Magazine.

Jenna Fisher (The Office) is on the cover of Shape magazine tight now. While she has inspiring things to say to the magazine, I was more inspired (or at least, more touched) by what she posted in her official MySpace Blog. (I didn’t even know she had one!) While I’m a huge fan of The Office, I haven’t followed the actresses personal life very closely. It turns out she had fractured her back (in 4 places)  in a fall and was not allowed to do any exercise for a long time. Shortly after that she separated from her husband, so naturally she was going through a very difficult emotional time where I’m sure she craved comfort food.

While initially using a trainer, she realized she didn’t have time to take a trainer with her everywhere. So she had to do it on her own – just like a normal person (like us!) Imagine that, a celebrity taking on a normal person exercise routine! (I’m pretty sure that if I was Oprah and could go swimming in my own private indoor pool I’d have a lot easier time getting in daily exercise, just sayin’!) Fisher writes about the ways she found to work out, and you know that she would have loved to be doing anything else than jump roping in a hotel gym (like soaking in the pool!). But she did it. She made the smart food choices to pick salad over french fries, and she realized that she didn’t have to work out every day – but three days a week of cardio was important for her.

Her motivation is the same as ours (or at least similar – hear me out!) because being asked to pose for Shape Magazine was one of her motivators. And I’m sure knowing she gets filmed for The Office, pose on the red carpet, and even endure the paparazii (read: be seen, photographed) motivates her to look good. And you are in your life, and you get seen and photographed, too. Maybe you won’t end up on a gossip blog, but you certainly might end up on Facebook or in a family home movie (maybe even a sex tape – I won’t judge!). The motivation is THERE for you to grab.

If any of you are thinking of starting a new fitness routine I just want to say “You can do it!” I had the help of a trainer giving me tips but most of the time I was on the web looking for new exercises, reading Shape for their latest Cardio blast routine and cooking my own food.

It’s not easy to commit to being fit. At least it didn’t come easily to me. It means making sacrifices in other areas. After working a 10 or 12 hour day all I wanted to do was curl up on the couch, eat food and watch TV. I thought, “I deserve it! I worked really hard today!” But, I read a lot of Shape Magazine’s real-women success stories and they kept me motivated. I told myself that if a working mother of three could drag herself to the gym so could I. My mantra became – no excuses! – Fisher on MySpace (You guys should really read the entire post!!!)

Something I didn’t even realize was that Shape Magazine is a great resource. Before when I’d see the magazine I’d sneer as though it was an impossible feat to look like the cover models. I assumed that anyone who subscribed to the magazine was one of those naturally thin people who were dedicated to eating vegan or at least drinking only soy milk (which I’ve had – it’s pretty okay). I set myself up for failure in eliminating myself. But this isn’t just about looking good, it’s also about health. Hell, it’s also about emotionally health – endorphins make you happy! Who doesn’t need to be happier?

And, seriously, Shape Magazine is awesome. I’m not just saying that because I’m on the cover. I honestly buy it every month. The stories and workouts are great. Their website is a great resource too. As is YouTube! You can watch a lot of the correct ways to do exercises. Tons of trainers post videos. – Fisher on Myspace

No matter what you do, you have to be willing to not be perfect. You will never feel totally happy with things if you strive for perfection. Everyone has a flaw. You may envy Jennifer Love Hewitt’s large breasts but there may be days she wishes they were smaller. People love Beyonce’s bootilicious booty but I’m pretty sure there have been times she’s felt self conscious about it. The grass is always greener and you can always find a way to want someone else’s body. We all know that Paris Hilton is very thin like a model (although I don’t see her as a role model in any other respect) but have you ever seen her feet? She can afford really expensive shoes but it’s no secret in Hollywood that her feet are HUGE and often called ugly by celebrity bloggers.

“If I could tell women one thing, it would be that everyone worries about their bodies and what they look like in their clothes. I’ve heard gorgeous actresses say, ‘My ears are too pointy’ or ‘My feet are horrible. … But rather than complain about it, we should be laughing at our imperfections to make ourselves feel better. I’ll squeeze the jiggle on my thigh for you just to show you I’m not perfect!” – Jenna Fisher to Shape Magazine

Okay, so why have I wrote about this? Because health and fitness is important. And I even have a few tips of my own. And that’s the best thing we can do, especially having the Internet – sharing tips.

the magic bullet

1. The Magic Bullet @ Amazon. $54.99. I have this and the thing I use it for the most is to make fruit smoothies. Yes, it’d be tempting to make milkshake creations – but fruit is so sweet on its own. I buy frozen fruit, vanilla soy milk, yogurts (any flavor – go wild!) fresh fruit (which sometimes I also freeze – like if it’s bananas or strawberries) and even canned fruit to get things like mangos or cheap pinneapple. Combine that with ice and you have any number of combinations of different fruit smoothies. I’ve found that I’ll have this at any time – it makes me feel like I’m having such a healthy breakfast. I’ll have it as a snack in the day, or even late at night for a treat. The trick is to make sure it’s not all liquid, that’s why I get fruit to freeze and bulk it up. The thing about The Magic Bullet that I love is that it’s SO easy to clean. I HATE doing dishes. It grosses me out, seriously. So anyway. I highly recommend this. You can make other things with this – but fruit smoothies are the beeeest. Ever try making a pina colada smoothie? Go to Trader Joe’s and get some coconut milk!

yoga for the rest of us

2. Yoga for the Rest of Us (Heart Healthy Yoga) by Peggy Cappy @ Amazon $22.49. I have this DVD and it guides you through a series of sun salutations. They show you how to do it normally or using a chair. It’s made so simple that even my Mom can do it. It gets you moving and makes you feel great – warm all over (because you’re greeting the sun). If you ever wanted to try yoga (or know someone who does) but were afraid – try this DVD.

buy a trampoline

3. Buy a trampoline! Urban Rebounder Folding Trampoline Workout System @ Amazon $89.00. You’ll work out of it’s fun. Now, I don’t know about DVDs to use while on the trampoline and all that. But I know that having a trampoline to use while listening to some Gwen Stefani will get your heart rate up and make your legs get toned. This one has good reviews on Amazon and is built for adults (someone mentions being 220 lbs and using it just fine).  This one comes with a stabilizing bar (not a bad idea) as well as DVDs that you can use. I think the most important thing is that you know you’re buying a quality trampoline that wont’ break, and Urban Rebounder is a quality brand.

I’ve tried a lot of things. I’ve done the cabbage diet, the tofu diet, the Atkins diet, the south beach diet, the diet where you only eat nuts and cream cheese (whaaat?), the every kind of diet ever. I’ve biked, I’ve walked, fasted – I’ve done a lot. You just need a plan to stick to (28 days makes it a habit) and someone to support you and help you – walk with you, order salad with you. Those are the best dieting tips ever.

Okay gals (and guys) let’s do this. I won’t order fries if you don’t. PROMISE ME!
