Fun with Chemistry: a Ferrous Wheel (as seen on The Big Bang Theory)

We’re all geeky for something. For those of ya’ll lucky enough to love some of the truly geeky things I love (TV shows like: True Blood, The Big Bang Theory, Doctor Who) then you’ll be happy to know there is a place for a plus size geek girl to find shirts with geek street cred, yo.

It's smart and it'll confuse people. Fun with Chemistry: a Ferrous Wheel (as seen on The Big Bang Theory)

ThinkGeek.com is a mecca of geek toys, office supplies, clothing and more. Want an electronic butterfly in a jar? They have it. Want geek cat toys? They have them. A scrolling LED belt buckle? …Yup. Basically….it encourages you to stop being so serious and just have fun! And, hello, I love that spirit.

I received two geek girl t-shirts from the site, and I like them a lot. The geeky selection is great. They offer unisex/men shirts as well as women’s, kids, and other items of apparel. I would love to see my friend, Elizabeth, in the hand painted silk bacon scarf, seriously.

The sizes on the unisex shirts are 3XL, and the women’s shirts go to 2XL. I think they should let ... Read More

Savvy Fitness: Easy Yoga DVD (Netflix Instant Watch Suggestions)

easy yoga dvd

Hello everyone, it’s Rachel here. You guys know I’m the new plus size blogger. Something I haven’t talked about yet is the “F” word. Fitness. It’s something I try to make a part of my life more than I avoid it. I discovered that Netflix Watch Instantly had a yoga video, and gave it a try without any expectations. I’m by no means a yoga expert, so I stick to very easy yoga. This video, as it happens, was extremely easy and low impact, something perfect for beginners. If they remove it from Netflix Instant, I’ll might actually buy it because the Amazon.com price is very low.

The video is “Crunch- Candlelight Yoga” with Sara Ivanhoe.Isn’t it nice that Netflix offers that? I have done the routine twice and even though I would classify the video as very easy, I still felt a sense of energy and warmth afterwards. There are some reviews on Amazon (linked above) which also speak of this feeling.

As a beginner, I felt attracted to how sincerely nonjudgmental the host, Sara, was. I was able to keep up with the moves, and this furthered my sense of accomplishment. And because I like it so much, I’ ... Read More

plus size robes for women

Hello, ShesSmart.com readers! To remind you all I’m Rachel, one of your new writers. I’m in my 30’s and what I’ll be covering is plus size fashion. That’s right, I’m not a petite size 2! I know that other women, just like me, want to know where quality plus size items are actually available. Sometimes it feels like a myth, all “okay, so there’s plus size clothing….out there….somewhere….don’t know if it fits or has quality….uh….” That’s why spreading the word about what works is as crucial to me as a seasonal cleaning of my closets. (I always put my seasonal-appropriate clothing in the dresser drawers I use most to make it easier for me. Likewise, I recently arranged my closet so I can easily grab my cardigans and Fall hoodies. )

The first site I’m spotlighting is Lingerie.com, which features all sorts of sexy lingerie. Oh, la, la! Gurlys, it’s time to get your sexy on. Although, I went for something that is both sexy and tame at the same time. How that gets accomplished, I don’t know. Mystery of life.

I’m reviewing the Luxurious Charmeuse Kimono Robe in ... Read More

The Top 5 Sparkly Dresses for Plus Size Women

sparkly dresses plus size

It’s not at all simple to find plus size dresses for special occasions. There was a time when it was impossible to find any sort of decent dress in the plus size category at all. But technology makes it so much easier to find the right dress for you, no matter your size.

Plus size fashion content: As the ShesSmart.com plus size blogger, I decided that we need to see some of the best options for sparkly dresses. I stay away from shiny dresses and large areas of shiny fabric because it tends to accentuate, pull, and tug at all the wrong areas. The last thing you want is to look tacky, and something that’s shiny, tight and short will get you to that dreaded tacky destination very fast. A-line skirts in dresses are very flattering.

Tip: If you are self-conscious about showing off your arms with sleeveless dresses, you can wear a shawl or a short sleeved capelet sweater (crocheted ones will keep you cool.) They are sometimes called shrugs or dolman sleeve shrugs. I have a black one that is useful for endless outfits. Sometimes I pin a brooch on it, even.

plus size funny t shirts

I got a chance to work with Fibers.com to create a shirt. The site lets people design personalized items like T-shirts and hoodies. As the new plus size blogger for ShesSmart.com, I was asked to tackle this one since it’s not easy to find cute shirts that fit all the time.

Fibers.com lets you select different sizes and colors for men’s or women’s apparel. In terms of plus sizes, they have XL, 1X and 2X. I was surprised they didn’t have a 3X at all, while for men they offer up to a 4X.

I discovered that I didn’t like most of their pre-set designs. Hello, cheesy phrases do not make a fabulous top! So, I opted (aka had ... Read More

plus size blogger

“We are SO glad to bring Rachel into the fold as our plus size blogger, as I know many of you have responded very positively when we’ve included plus size options in our posts! Now we have someone who will head up that section, and focus on doing plus size reviews and plus size giveaways! Make her feel welcome, mmkay? Love ya!” – Jessica Rae (Lead Writer for ShesSmart.com)

Hiya! I’m Rachel, and I’ll be your plus size fashion blogger for this site. I’m a blonde, 30-something who loves girly things like pink umbrella’s and sparkly crystal earrings. I’ll never vagazzle myself, but I am admittedly a fan of shine and sparkle.

I have a boyfriend,  and yes I made him go see “Eat, Pray, Love” at the theaters with me!

The Web is great to help us curvy girls, although it’s not always simple to know what shops are out there, and which ones of those are good. That’s where I hope to help. I’m also here to share any plus size tips I’ve learned as a fashion maven who was never the right size to feel she was allowed to be fashionable.
