Get Metallic Eyes

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Become a Hollywood glamazon by adding some shimmer to your eyes. And this means  MORE than just some shimmery white eyeshadow highlighting your browbone . That’s amateur hour. What I’m talking about is something with WOW effect.

I know that with holiday parties coming just around the corner you’ll want to do something different with your eyes. Rather than labor in front of the mirror for hours and come up with nothing different – or having tried to go SO different that it looks so bad you have to wash your face and start over – I’ve come with some tips to get metallic eyes.

Just do a swipe of a liquid eyeliner on your top lids for some pizzaz. Or use new Mascaras from Cover Girl that have the slightest hint of metallic in them to make your eyes POP. Want more drama? Try doing your entire top lid in gold shadow! A cheaper brand that has HIGH pigment in their eye products is the L’Oreal HIP line. I’ve used many of their products and I really like them. Whether you’re using metallic eyeshadow, metallic eyeliner or metallic eye makeup of any kind…you’re going to look stunning.

50% OFF! Christian Siriano for Payless

christian siriano payless

Important EDIT: Christian Siriano just announced on Oprah that everything he has done for Payless is 50% off. Go to Oprah.com to find the Payless store nearest you and to get the coupon. There ARE a few things that might be nice but a smart shopper knows that even though something is suddenly only $15.00 doesn’t make it a good purchase if you still don’t love it. I suspect this coupon rouse might be because his items aren’t selling.

Christian Siriano is doing shoes for Payless, which is instantly a mood-lifter. (He was the winner of Project Runway, remember?) Except…well, until you SEE the shoes. I’m torn. First off, the shoes and boots Siriano has done look very much like the ones designer Rodarte did a while ago. But my biggest problem is that I’m not sure if many of these shoe designs are wearable for the every day woman. One might argue that the reason they’re so affordable (all of these shoes are under $50) but still funky is that you’ll buy them just for special occasions. And if you’re a younger gal in her 20’s then it makes sense to buy them. But otherwise, I’m just not so sure.

Siriano has also done handbags but I’m less impressed by them – I think they should be MORE out there, more SPECIAL! The purses for payless look like almost anyone could have designed them. And we want to buy them for Siriano’s MARK on them!

You can view all of the Christian Siriano handbags and shoes on Payless.com. There is definitely a tonal difference between what Siriano had previewed on the runways and what has made its way into the store.

(First shoe shown: Christian Siriano for Payless Carolina Pump $34.99. This is the one shoe I really do like by him here, I do think this one is wearable.)

Christian Siriano for Payless Patent Zipper Boot

Christian Siriano for Payless Patent Zipper Boot $49.99: Payless.com says, “Designer Christiano Siriano fuses some of fall’s hottest trends into one totally wearable boot.” The boot is CUTE but uh, NOT wearable in the snow and slush. Even in the fall it’ll make your toes cold. One of our She’s Smart Style Tips: Pass on something cute that isn’t really wearable. You’ll thank me later.

christian siriano project runwayPayless Zippered Flat $29.99 – From the side these look ugly until I realize that flat gold thing is a ZIPPER. Well, I can dig that. And these ones are also wearable.

payless christian sirianoStrappy Sandals $29.99 – The way the top band is cut (and the thickness) is going to actually make your ankles look fatter than they are and give you cankles, rather than slimming them. BAD! Such a  rookie design move. If you’re a model who is size 0, it’d look okay. But uh, who is really a size 0?

Bottom line: These are mostly unrealistic shoes for women in the real world.

Anna Sui: Target Collection Picks

anna sui for target

Anna Sui for Target Mohair Cardigan – Heather Grey $50. But is it too shapeless? It looks cute, but you can’t really belt it… or can you?

anna sui dresses

Anna Sui for Target Seersucker Dress w/Lace – Black – $60. This works best on someone with a naturally petite figure. Not good if you have curves like large breasts and pronounced hips. This dress also runs a bit small. It’s something you’d see on Twiggy! Only hers would be white with big black shiny buttons.

anna sui lace dress

Anna Sui for Target Lace Halter Dress – Black $70. If you look at the detail up close the lace is really cool and I like this dress a lot. Pair it with a wrist full of bangles and some (or all) of your hair pulled back/up.

anna sui vest

Anna Sui for Target Acrylic Glencheck Plaid Vest – Black/Gray $20. This is such a great, versatile piece. I LOVE vests. It’s so affordable, too. You can wear this all through fall and winter. Wear long-sleeved shirts under it, and then pile a cardigan over it. And then add some long necklaces! Boho librarian chic? Totally.

And let’s make fun of the rest of the collection!

Those are the only items that I really like that Anna Sui has done for Target. You would really be asking for trouble if you got the Tulle Top. I mean, on the runway this might be able to look cool. Reality? Weird. Reminds me a little of a French airplane stewardess or something. It’s trampy. Uh, not that I’m calling all French stewardesses trampy…

I WANT to like this patterned dress because the neckline is cute, but it’s so unmistakable that once you’ve seen it, you’ve seen it. And then you’re just the girl with the dress that everyone else has.

I have no idea what Anna Sui was thinking putting out this cotton top thing… It’s so unflattering. If you designed this for Project Runway, Tim Gunn would be making such a trouble face. It looks like bulky armor – no, tacky armor.

Look Thinner with Colorblock Dresses and Colorblock Skirts

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

The use of colorblock in clothing is genius. It can really trick the eye into making you look a lot more thin and shapely than you are. I was realizing this the other day when Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) was wearing a colorblock dress on Gossip Girl and it made her waist look so nipped and fit. When you type or say colorblocking enough times, it starts looking and sounding weird. But the actual color blocking effect? It’s genius!

How does colorblocking work? Visual magic! It uses blocks of color to shape you. As you know, white looks larger and black makes things look smaller. But more than that, you can actually sculpt the form using wide lines or thin lines of color down the middle of a dress. Be smart: color block!

Alyson Hannigan Gives a Cat Tip! Soft Claws for Cats

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009
Alyson Hannigan's cat. "Here is the tail eater!"

Alyson Hannigan's cat. "Here is the tail eater!" From Hannigan's @alydenisof

Alyson Hannigan (Buffy, How I Met Your Mother) has a Twitter account, and I’m so glad she does because she is one of the sweetest celebrities EVER. She was recently talking about Halloween and tweeted, “My cat is making it hard to decorate for Halloween. She is eating the tails off paper rats. It’s like she alyson hanniganKNOWS they are rats!!!” Adorable! And she then posted a picture of her cat, which shows the black rats that she was putting on her steps. I love those Halloween decorations, and I love the look of her cat. But the thing people really noticed about this picture was the PINK NAILS on her cat!

Breaking story update: Photographic proof of Shopcat licking her scratch box instead of  actually scratching at it.

Quickly clearing up the scandalous rumors about her cat, she said: “Yes, her nails are Pink. Not paint, Soft Claws. They keep her from destroying the furniture!” And wow. I didn’t know they made those. I have a cat and she has all of her claws (every cat I’ve had before has always not had front claws – until I heard how horrible it is for them to be removed). I’ve tried trimming her nails, but she then just gets more deliberate about sharpening them on furniture. And that? That’s bad. She’s even ripped an entire curtain in half! (Luckily it was an old curtain I didn’t care about). But I really like the idea of these soft claw things. Because eventually she’s going to start ruining

Alyson Hannigan, hubby Alexis Denisof, and their baby Satyana

Alyson Hannigan, hubby Alexis Denisof, and their baby Satyana

things that aren’t old, and that I really care about. I thought I had it easy when my dog didn’t like chewing my shoes – but maybe the cat will want to shred them. Yipes!

I’ve heard of Soft Claws before once in passing, but never gave them much thought. But if “Willow Rosenberg” uses them and likes them, I think it’s time to look at them again. The website for Soft Claws says they were, “Developed by a veterinarian, Soft Claws® are vinyl nail caps that glue on to your cat’s claws. It covers the claw tips so no damage occurs when your cat scratches.”

There’s lots of sizes available, which is good although I’m not sure how you decide what size nails your cat has (oh, there’s a cat claw chart)!

You DO get to pick out what color you want, which is fun. I think for my gray cat I’d pick the blue and pink combo pack because I like both of those colors. It’s kind of hilarious that they even have specific color schemes like “Touch of Fall Combo”, “Candy Corn Combo Pack”, and “Surfer Combo Pack” – although maybe the candy corn one would have been cute for Halloween. Who says cat’s can be stylish?

soft clawsA package of Soft Claws has 40 nail caps, 2 tubes of adhesive (yikes – that could get messy), applicator tips and instructions. One of those packages supposedly has enough for 4 applications on the cats front paws – and each application lasts between 4-6 weeks. Yadda, yadda math says each package could last between 4-6 months. But how do you know when the claw is ready to come off, do you just take it off or let it fall off and then your cat has free range to destroy something before you realize it? And will these just fall off anywhere, making messes? I don’t know. The good thing is that the kit is under $20, not way expensive like I thought it might be.

I want to emphasize that I have never tried these so I have no clue how well they might work, and I’m writing this of my own decision not getting paid by the company to mention them. If they want to send some to me for my cat, they should go ahead! But then I will disclose  to you guys that they did that, like any review on ShesSmart.com.

Here's my kitty!

Here's my kitty!

If you’re looking for a way to keep your cat from scratching your furniture, this seems like a good option. Mew, mew!

Bargain News! Sweater Dresses on Sale

Monday, October 26th, 2009

I love sweater dresses. But sweaters are expensive. And dresses are expensive. So much sweater dresses are – you must be a genius because you guessed it – expensive. But I worked to find you sweater dresses on sale for under $100.

Sweater dresses for fall are perfect to wear all the time. You can also wear them for winter, these sweater dresses are great with boots and tights.  Sweater dresses and tights? Love it. Sweater dresses and boots? Love it.

Victoria’s Secret is loaded with sweater dresses, but most of them are 1) Way too form fitting/sexy to want to wear without being self-conscious, 2) Way too expensive! This is why Victoria’s Secret Sweater Dresses are mostly a no-go for me. However I did find one that I like a lot and included down below, it’s a gorgeous chocolate brown color and looks like it would move well. It has enough detail to make it interesting, but it’s all in a solid color so you can layer it with accessories like crazy (rings, tights, boots, hats, whatever).

The New-ish, Easy Way to Wash Your Face at Night

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Soap Bubble by squigglycircle on Flickr

Soap Bubble by squigglycircle on Flickr

Do you wash your face before bed or do you sleep with your makeup on? TSK TSK! Yes, these are some judgmental eyes looking at you as I ask that. But ONLY out of judgmental love! I swear. Because it’s not just makeup you’re leaving on your face… it’s GRIME and OIL! Who wants that soaking into their face for 8 hours? Not me. And not you. I know you don’t, because you’re smart and sweet and you always lend a dollar to your friend at the office for a Diet Coke. See, I know you. And I used to be you. *Cue cheesy music*

It’s true, I used to not wash my face before bed. You couldn’t pay me too. I actually eliminated mascara from my routine because that was the one reason that would make me feel like I HAD to wash my face at night. Otherwise I would just go around doing this and that, and then poof down into bed and sleep while listening to Sarah McLachlan music. But I’ve made the change – I’ve been washing my face before bed these days, even on the days where I’m not wearing any makeup. Why? Because it feels so much nicer to lay a clean face on a pillow. You know what else? when I’m super tired, if I wash my face, sometimes it wakes me up and I can watch an extra hour of TV! So, it’s just an all around WIN.

Sometimes you don't to deal with it all! By pyxopotamus on Flickr.

Sometimes you don't to deal with it all! By pyxopotamus on Flickr.

But I UNDERSTAND how hard it feels to make that change – to actually go through the process of washing your face before bed, especially if you haven’t been doing it for years. Well, you already know all of the reasons why it’s bad, and maybe you think your pores aren’t a priority. That’s fine. But what if I had a suggestion to help? Maybe you would consider it? GOOD!

I haven’t tried these, but what about makeup wipes? Like Revlon Makeup Remover Towelettes that you’d find at any old drugstore? Makeup remover wipes seem worth trying. The thing holding me back has been the idea of leaving soap on my face. But the makeup towlettes from Neutrogena say “Leaves skin thoroughly clean with no heavy residue; no rinsing necessary” so…that’s a pretty big PRO for me.

Get Younger Looking Skin in Under Two Weeks

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

"How young do I look now?!" Picture by madcitycat on Flickr.

I happen to LOATHE Dr. Oz. Most of his shows are about freaking people out on a daily basis about toxic mold or whatever else ‘could’ be affecting your health but usually isn’t. Unless you want to live in a perpetual state of fear, I suggest staying away from watching his show daily. But that’s just me. And today I watched his show, anyway. (Nothing else was on!)

Today he had a segment on his show about how to look younger in nine days. I have no idea why he picked nine days, so I’m saying ten – it’s a better number. What tips did he offer? He had Dr. Amy Wechsler on the show talking about her book The Mind-Beauty Connection: 9 Days to Less Stress, Gorgeous Skin, and a Whole New You. What tips did she offer? She clarified some beauty myths about what can work, and also discussed the best way to care for your face.

Beauty Tips! The three easy steps for making your face look younger: Use a gentle face wash that won’t take too many oils from your face. Moisturize your face! AND it should have SPF. Finally, occasionally use an exfoliate.

younger looking skin

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, For All Skin Types 4 fl oz (118 ml) @ Amazon $4 (Dermatologists recommend the Cetaphil brand a lot because it is so gentle for skin – whether it’s the lotions or face wash.)

Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer, SPF 15, Fragrance Free – 4 fl oz @ Amazon $11

St. Ives Invigorating Apricot Scrub Jar for Sensitive Skin – 10 Oz @ Amazon $10

Now, you may already feel young in your 20’s, but you’ll want to make this a constant routine so that you never have to wake up when you’re 40 and realize you have dropped the ball about taking care of your face. Beauty experts in magazines are always talking about how you should start taking care of your face very early on.

What in your fridge can help your skin? Cucumber, Water, Chocolate, Safflower Oil… Are they all good for your skin?

Cucumbers for your skin: Yes, you can put a cucumber on your eye (or any soft, cold item) can help the bags under your skin. They also smell good and then you can eat them afterward. Yum. Mmm… I love cucumber sandwiches.

Water for your skin: Surprisingly, water does not help your skin. Your skin is mostly affected by what you do to the top of it. But this is NO reason to stop drinking lots of water. Because I’m sure Dr. Oz will have a show tomorrow about how water will save your life!

Chocolate for your skin: Ah, they think they can trick us with this one? Well, we already know that chocolate apparently does have anti-oxidants that are good for you – but I think only dark chocolate. And we do know that dark chocolate does not taste as good as milk chocolate… (and Halloween is coming up…there will be so much candy!) but I think that if you get into the groove of only indulging in dark chocolate you’ll grow accustomed to liking it.

Safflower Oil for your skin: I’ve never heard of this. Safflower Oil is like olive oil, but it’s colorless and odorless and you can use it as a moisturizer. I’ve used vegetable oil when I made my own foot scrub! I worked so hard in high school to never have an oily face, and now they want me to put oil on my body. Psh. But I’d do it at night after a bath or something, I think. Especially with the dry winter months trying to make my skin cry.

Hey You – You Use Too Much Shampoo!

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

good shampoos

You guys, listen to me for a second. Or maybe more than a second. Ahem. A lot of you are using TOO MUCH of your shampoo and conditioner! It’s wasteful of the product and it’s making you have to buy more and more way too fast!I know that I fall prey to squeezing out too much shampoo/conditioner into my hands, but that’s why we must be vigilant!

“How much shampoo should I use?” About the size of a quarter if you have really long hair.  If you have short hair use a dime-sized amount of shampoo. Excess shampoo foam means you’ve just wasted a lot of the product. Yipes. Trust me, you aren’t THAT dirty.

“How much conditioner should I use?” Much less than you think! Just a dime-sized amount if you have medium-length hair.

Pureology hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner duo for $37.95. (max 2 deals p/order) @ Amazon $40 (Cheapest Duo Deal I could find!) This seems to be loved by people, with very high five star Amazon ratings. Interesting… I might need to check this out more.

Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Herbal Shampoo @ Sephora $13 (I kind of want to smell it forever.)

Bumble and Bumble Conditioner, Creme de Coco, 8 fl oz @ Amazon $25 (I’ve usd this and it smells delicious. No need to get the shampoo too, the conditioner will leave the great smell in your hair almost as long as using both, I think.)

Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Lavender Mint Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner @ Amazon $35

Phytojoba Intense Hydrating Shampoo @ Sephora $24 (Mixed reviews)
